Canon Story: The Final Problem
Rating: Gen

The telegram fluttered to the floor.
“My dear, you look pale as a ghost! What is it?”
“I am afraid I must return to London at once.”
“Is it your husband?”
“Yes.”
“Oh, my dear, is he, I mean to say, did something—?”
“It is far worse than being a widow.”
“What is?”
“Being the wife of a widower.”

However one views the Watson/Mary relationship, it must have been difficult for her.

Poor Mary. Already knowing how much of her husband's heart belonged to another, and grieving for him too.

In a very real sense, they were a triad, and they've lost the core of their union.

"...the wife of a widower.” That is such a perfect way of putting it - you're always the poet. However you want to interpret the specifics of the relationship between these three people, it fits Mary and Watson's feelings so well.
