He opened his mouth. I raised my hand.
“You will do it again. It is my lot to forgive and yours to trespass.”

And yes, it looks like Holmes will always do what he believes to be for the best - no matter how much it hurts those that love him.

Thank you. I prefer this interpretation, that Watson knows this is Holmes's nature and Watson accepts his role (or not), rather than him being duped and disappointed over and over again.
