In my account I said that Holmes was smiling and at his ease throughout the St. Simon case. Actually I found myself quite unable to interpret his moods during those last days before my marriage, though I thought I knew him better than anyone. The distant, almost pained look that would come across his face sometimes was unfathomable to me.

Thanks... I guess Watson just didn't test out the "he really loves you and doesn't want to let you go, duh" theory, even though it fits all the facts!
