Thanks. In the push for marriage equality people routinely brought up the ridiculousness of gay or lesbian pairs that had been together for 40 years, being treated as less legal than a drunk starlet getting married for 70 hours in Vegas as a publicity stunt.

As debriswoman has said, it's an interesting contrast to make. It would appear Brackenstall was looking for a trophy rather than a spouse. It seems unfair that his union was considered the greater contribution to society.

Oh yeah, the cruel irony that was brought up repeatedly by those arguing for legal marriage - that a gay or lesbian pair could be together for 40 years and they were treated as less legitimate than some Hollywood dink on his/her 10th marriage.
