Naturally LJ’s new TOS have left all of us feeling rather unsettled. However, the comm is definitely going to continue just on LJ, with a regular backup to Dreamwidth. The community aspect of the group is so important and there are so few active members, it wouldn’t be a good idea to run it in two places. And I know not everyone wants to get a Dreamwidth account.

However, this is probably a good time to talk about the future of the comm in general. Last August, at my request but with thesmallhobbit’s agreement, we decided we weren’t going to run another round after Round 5 ended. I didn’t take that step lightly—this comm was my first home on LJ, and my proper entry into fandom after lurking on the edges. This is where I’ve made my long-term fandom friends. But the comm takes up a fair bit of my time and I’d like to use that time now to try and write other things.

There may be someone out there who would like to take over for Round 6. If so, PM either thesmallhobbit or myself and we’ll discuss it. But that’s looking increasingly unlikely. So our plan is this. We’ll continue on as before until the end of Round 5. Then we’ll put the comm into semi-retirement. People will still be able to request to join, and members will still be able to post 60s. But there will be no more formal schedules and no more mod posts. It’s also unlikely Small Hobbit and I will be posting any more 60s ourselves. We would be keeping an eye on the comm though and commenting on any new 60s. Also at that point it would be OK for members to post further 60s over at the Dreamwidth sherlock60 if they preferred.

Mrs. Hudson has graciously agreed to join us at holmes_minor, where her poetry page would be appearing monthly, rather than weekly. And though we wouldn’t be having regular discussion posts, there is nothing stopping us having them occasionally—either discussing the canon itself, or a topic related to canon.

We’re not truly coming to an end—just moving sideways slightly. I’d just like to add here our thanks to spacemutineer, and to everyone who came and joined in with us over the years. I am very proud to have been, and to continue to be, a part of this marvellous community.

I support finishing out the round and then retirement. And whatever steps you decide would decrease the burden on yourself in the meantime I also support. As much as I appreciate the discussion pages (I use the train one yet this week), if you feel if would help to stop doing them before the round ends, that's ok. Or even stop doing the reminder and picking out the poetry form of the week. Whatever. I'd like a nice complete set of 60s, but that's about it.

I'm so very pleased that I got here in time to join the comm and be part of a full round. It's been a rewarding experience -- even though I haven't written many sixties, and even though I'm usually a few weeks behind -- and it's been such a pleasure to have a chance to meet all of you.

Well, it's been a pleasure to have all your contributions ^__^ Especially your comments on the discussion posts - must admit I hadn't been expecting anyone to go through them quite so thoroughly ^_^ In fact, you've probably gone through things more thoroughly than I did when I was compiling them. It's been a real boost for me that you've found the posts so interesting ^_^

And I sincerely hope that we'll still keep bumping into each other at other comms after we get to the end of the round here ^^

This might be a daft idea and I shouldn't really be making a suggestion as I only read here, but why not repost the discussion posts from the beginning?

That is definitely not a daft idea. It's something that hadn't occurred to me and is certainly worth considering.

My only reservation is that the discussion posts have never got that much attention relatively speaking. The main discussions and the social part of the comm have actually been mostly under the 60s and the poetry page.

My inclination at the moment is to move on from Sherlock60 and try instead to keep that community feeling going on Holmes Minor. But Small Hobbit and I have got a few months to think about your idea and discuss it. So thank you very much for that - I greatly appreciate your suggestion.

I've greatly enjoyed reading the posts, though I know I rarely comment. If you do consider my idea, I'd be happy to help with the reposting, all being well. I'm by no means a Holmes expert but I love the people in this comm and Sherlock Holmes,of course!

Heh. Your linkspams are precisely the kind of history I like, and furthermore, are often relevant to my historical fic-writing interests, even the ones that range outside of Victorian London. Of course I've been eating them up! And especially so, given I haven't had to do any of the hard work of researching them. ;-)

(With luck, they'll also help me over the hump of being intimidated about writing ACD fic. There are so many talented writers in this fandom who have such a command of historical detail available to them...)

And I'm sure we will. Or maybe even in our personal journals, gasp!
