It has come to our notice that there may be some of our contributors who have a few stories for which they haven't yet posted a 60.

If they would find a little encouragement would help them then do please comment on this post and we will see what can be arranged.  (Although we fear support may be a little tepid if VALL is one of the ones you are intending to write for!)

Round 6 has now come to an end and the LiveJournal version of the comm has closed.

The DW comm will remain open but in a semi-retired form. New members will continue to be accepted and all members will be able to post 60 word stories. The mods will continue to keep an eye on the comm but there will be no more formal rounds and no more mod posts.

Thank you so much to everyone who has taken part over the years. And we hope that everybody will come and join us at our sister comm [community profile] holmes_minor for more ACD canon microfiction!

I am [personal profile] alafaye and I am the volunteer mod for our next round, number 6!

I've read some of the stories on and off throughout my years upon this Earth, but it was with this community, during round 4, that I read them entirely without pause. I was unable to participate as much as I wanted to during round 5, owing to some offline events, but when I heard that we would be ending the rounds, I was sad since I now have Sundays off. I volunteered and here we are.

I've been in some kind of fandom since I was in middle school and I've since expanded to many others (too many to list). Sherlock Holmes has always been one of my first loves, however, and I've never left it. (I will endeavor to not let my fannish ideas color my posts here, but do forgive if they leak in without my permission, the sneaky things.) I eagerly look forward reading the stories with you during this next round and shall do my best to not muck it up too badly here as this will our first round here.

We do have a few things to consider before we start next week, August 20th.

-What order shall we read them in?
-And would you like for me to guide a discussion of the story or did you have something new in mind that we could do for our Sunday reading?

Let me know in the comments and I'll let everyone know what our plan will be on Friday if all are amiable.

Until then dear ones.

A Look Back

Here we are—right at the end of Round 5 and for Small Hobbit and I, it’s the end of our stint of being in charge.

To finish things off, I thought it might be a nice idea to take a look back at some of my favourite 60s from Rounds 3-5. I’ve tried to include as many writers as possible, past and present, and I hope you won’t mind that I’ve slipped a few of my own 60s in too.

So do take a look! Hopefully a few of these will bring back some pleasant memories…

The 60s )

And that’s it! When I joined [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 just over four years ago, I never imagined that I would end up being one of the mods, that I would make lasting friends, and that I would become so thoroughly familiar with the canon. (Still can’t remember the characters’ names though. Do kind of sympathise with ACD on this one…)

I’m sure [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit would like to join me in thanking everyone who took part in Rounds 3-5 in whatever way, but especially [livejournal.com profile] debriswoman, [livejournal.com profile] gardnerhill, [livejournal.com profile] okapi1895 and [livejournal.com profile] rachelindeed. And of course we'd like to thank [livejournal.com profile] spacemutineer, who kindly allowed us to take over the running of the comm after she and [livejournal.com profile] methylviolet10b stepped down.

Small Hobbit and I will be taking more of a backseat from here on in but we will continue to be supportive of the comm. I certainly will be popping round fairly regularly to read and comment.

So, here's to new mod [livejournal.com profile] alafaye - we wish them all the best with Round 6! I believe they will be doing an introduction post on 13th August and then the round will be beginning on the 20th. Don’t forget that from now on you will be able to take part here on LJ or at [community profile] sherlock60 - whatever’s best for you.

And whether you’re taking part in the new round or not, Small Hobbit and I hope you’ll join us over at [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor / [community profile] holmes_minor for even more canon microfiction and poetry!

Some days ago I put up a post about the future of [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60, announcing that [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit and I wouldn’t be running any more rounds after Round 5 ends. And almost in passing, I said if anyone wanted to run the next round, they should get in contact.

And… someone did!

[livejournal.com profile] alafaye has come forward and asked if they can host Round 6, and [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit and I have gratefully accepted.

Things are presently still at the planning stage. This post is really just to let you know that [livejournal.com profile] alafaye will be running the next round and to see what kind of interest is out there. We have already decided between us all that Round 6 would be run on both the LJ and the DW comms to give [livejournal.com profile] alafaye the best chance of finding participants.

The present round will be coming to an end on Sunday, 6th August. [livejournal.com profile] alafaye will then do an introduction post on the 13th and Round 6 will formally start on the 20th August.

If you have any ideas for Round 6, please leave them in the comments. For example, which reading order would you prefer: publishing date, timeline—or something else? This is not to commit [livejournal.com profile] alafaye to anything—just to do a bit of brainstorming.

[livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit and I will be staying on as mods at Sherlock60, but after Round 5 we’ll be taking more of a backseat. Small Hobbit will be commenting from time to time but doesn’t want to be committed to finding time every Sunday. I will be commenting pretty regularly but I too don’t want to be committed to every week.

I’ll continue to be in charge of archiving the LJ comm over at DW. Also, Mrs. Hudson will still be transferring over to [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor, where her poetry page will be becoming a monthly post, rather than weekly. But [livejournal.com profile] alafaye will be coming up with their own brand new activities for Sherlock60.

We’re pretty excited about the comm’s future now—[livejournal.com profile] alafaye’s enthusiasm being rather contagious. It looks like Round 6 is in very good hands.

Naturally LJ’s new TOS have left all of us feeling rather unsettled. However, the comm is definitely going to continue just on LJ, with a regular backup to Dreamwidth. The community aspect of the group is so important and there are so few active members, it wouldn’t be a good idea to run it in two places. And I know not everyone wants to get a Dreamwidth account.

However, this is probably a good time to talk about the future of the comm in general. Last August, at my request but with [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit’s agreement, we decided we weren’t going to run another round after Round 5 ended. I didn’t take that step lightly—this comm was my first home on LJ, and my proper entry into fandom after lurking on the edges. This is where I’ve made my long-term fandom friends. But the comm takes up a fair bit of my time and I’d like to use that time now to try and write other things.

There may be someone out there who would like to take over for Round 6. If so, PM either [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit or myself and we’ll discuss it. But that’s looking increasingly unlikely. So our plan is this. We’ll continue on as before until the end of Round 5. Then we’ll put the comm into semi-retirement. People will still be able to request to join, and members will still be able to post 60s. But there will be no more formal schedules and no more mod posts. It’s also unlikely Small Hobbit and I will be posting any more 60s ourselves. We would be keeping an eye on the comm though and commenting on any new 60s. Also at that point it would be OK for members to post further 60s over at the Dreamwidth [community profile] sherlock60 if they preferred.

Mrs. Hudson has graciously agreed to join us at [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor, where her poetry page would be appearing monthly, rather than weekly. And though we wouldn’t be having regular discussion posts, there is nothing stopping us having them occasionally—either discussing the canon itself, or a topic related to canon.

We’re not truly coming to an end—just moving sideways slightly. I’d just like to add here our thanks to [livejournal.com profile] spacemutineer, and to everyone who came and joined in with us over the years. I am very proud to have been, and to continue to be, a part of this marvellous community.

This is just to let everyone know that our mirror comm [community profile] sherlock60 now exists.

Remember that you can still access your posts and comments on Dreamwidth using OpenID via LJ. Though don’t worry too much about that. We will be regularly reimporting [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60, and so any edits made on LJ will eventually turn up on the other side too. [Edited to add: Unfortunately that isn't true. Any edit made on LJ won't show up on DW in the next import. The LJ original and its DW copy have to be edited separately.]

[community profile] sherlock60 has been set to moderated membership. Do feel free to request to join the community if you have a Dreamwidth account and would like to do so. But we must stress the community is intended solely to be an archive. All activity (60s, poems, commenting, laughing at mods’ northern accents) will be continuing on LJ.

[identity profile] scfrankles.livejournal.com
You may recall my personal journal was recently temporarily suspended due to it erroneously being flagged as a source of spam. This had the side-effect of all my posts also temporarily disappearing from [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60.

Which brought home to [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit and I just how vulnerable the comm is. A great many people, past and present, have put an awful lot of work into [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 and we really don’t want to risk any of that being lost.

Therefore, we are proposing to import a copy of the comm over to Dreamwidth, and then to re-import it at regular intervals as new content is added. (This mirror comm would just be a record, rather than an active community—we would be continuing on LiveJournal.) Before we do anything though, we want to see how everyone feels about this.

I must emphasise that no-one with a live account on LJ would lose control over their copied posts and comments at the Dreamwidth [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60. All authors will still be able to manage them using OpenID via LiveJournal. There is a little more information on accessing imported posts and comments here, and more information about using OpenID on Dreamwidth here.

So what do you think?

You may have noticed that all my comments and posts, including - most importantly - the poetry pages and the discussions, disappeared from the comm yesterday. And also that my name was struck through. This was because my journal was temporarily suspended. (I knew all that being sensible, boring and well-behaved was going to catch up with me eventually...)

It seems my journal had been flagged erroneously as a source of spam. Thankfully LJ quickly ascertained this wasn't true and everything should now be back to normal.

Apart from me quivering a little bit.

We all have our own ideas about how Dr Watson would like to spend December, whether it would be hot on the heels of an escaping criminal or sitting comfortably in front of the fire sipping mulled wine.  And now you have the opportunity to share those ideas with others.

Once more this year [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes are running WAdvent, with the chance to contribute tales, poems or artwork.  So can we encourage you to head over to the WAdvent Calendar 2016 and check which dates are available and maybe sign up to take one.  In addition, on the calendar you will see certain dates are marked with a present.  These will be open prompt days when we are promised all sorts of excitement.

And for everyone, whether or not you are able to contribute, don't forget to head to [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes every day in December to open up the next window of the WAdvent Calendar.
[identity profile] thesmallhobbit.livejournal.com
We know many of our readers and commenters have a fondness for Dr Watson.  We would encourage you therefore to join Miss Mary Sutherland in dusting off your typewriter or Mr Jabez Wilson and purchase a penny bottle of ink, a new quill pen and several sheets of foolscap paper, so that you too can participate in the wonders of [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes July Writing Prompts.

Every day there will be a new prompt to provide inspiration.  And rest assured, all your other favourite characters can be involved too.  Indeed, for this month only, it is not necessary to batter, bruise or generally make life difficult for the good doctor - unless you wish to of course.

But if you do not wish to write, you may produce artwork or just go along to read and be entertained.  We understand there will even be derivatives from the One True Telling.

For further details I encourage you to head over to Watson's Woes: Coming in Three Weeks.
[identity profile] thesmallhobbit.livejournal.com
We are delighted to announce the imminent arrival of Round 5 of [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60

Do please join us as we go with Dr John Watson to meet Mr Sherlock Holmes for the very first time.

This round we shall be taking the stories in roughly chronological order, as seen by Dr Watson.  (Yes, we are aware the doctor occasionally gets his timing confused.)  We shall begin with Chapters 1 to 7 of A Study in Scarlet on Sunday 3 April.

Those who would like are encouraged to post a 60 word ficlet of their own, based roughly on the story they have read.  (Oh, and please do remember you will need to be a member to post.  All are welcome to join.)

This time our discussion post will be of a more general nature, with themes from the doctor's stories which relate to different aspects of Victorian life.

Our very popular poetry page will continue and we are extremely grateful to Mrs Hudson for doing so.  This year she will be ably assisted by Rachel, her housemaid, who has been very busy finding appropriate poems for us to read and perhaps reflect upon.  We shall be revisiting many of the poetry forms we enjoyed in the last round, as well as learning a few new ones.

Posting begins on Sunday, but if you are unable to join us that day please do not feel disappointed, for we continue posting all week.

We hope many of you will join us as we begin our fifth round, whether writing ficlets or poems, commenting or by reading along with us.  Anonymous posting is enabled, but moderated.

"Dr Watson, Mr Sherlock Holmes," said Stamford, introducing us.

[livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor
younger brother of [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60

Holmes Minor

A new Livejournal comm for all ficlets and poems of 500 words or less, for all characters belonging to the ACD Holmes 'verse.

All are welcome to join Mr Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson in their continuing (short) adventures.  Inspector Lestrade and Inspector Stanley Hopkins will be there, and Mrs Hudson already has the kettle on.  So don't delay - come and play today!

And for extra inspiration: here is our first monthly prompt.

We're heading towards the end of Round 4 and [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit and I thought it might be a good idea to put up a discussion post about [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60's future. We definitely want it to have a future but we also think it’s time to give it a revamp.

So, I’m going to list some points here and whether you’re already been posting, you’ve just been reading along or you’ve been considering joining in, if you’re interested in what’s going to be happening in the comm after we come to the end of this round, we’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

1. Canon Discussion Post: I have been involved in some very interesting discussions over the years but it has to be said this post gets the least attention out of the various comm activities, and a lot of discussions about the week’s story often happen naturally under the 60s and on the poetry page anyway.

So, [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit has come up with an excellent suggestion to rejig the discussion post. Instead of discussing the week’s story directly we could pick a theme connected to the story. For example, with BLUE we could look at the Victorian Christmas, for SPEC we could look at exotic animals in canon, for SOLI we could look at the craze for bicycles, and so on.

How do you feel about this? Is there something else you’d like to do instead?

2. Poetry Page: We both want to keep Mrs. Hudson’s poetry page. It’s turned out to be quite popular and a lot of fun. But even though I have consulted with Mrs. Hudson (^^”), I must admit I haven’t actually come up with any thoughts regarding revamping it.

Is there anything you’d like changed or added? Anything in particular you’d like to try regarding poetry?

3. Reading Schedule: So far we’ve had R1: alphabetical order, R2: Baring-Gould chronological order, R3: the ones [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit needed to do, the ones [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles needed to do, followed by the ones [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles had already done (er, this is probably not one to repeat...), R4: published order.

Is there a particular order you’d like to go in for Round 5—either a new order or repeating one we’ve had before?

4. Any other thoughts and suggestions?

As well as discussing [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60, there’s something else we’d like to talk about.

[livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit and I are planning on setting up a sister comm, for all forms of microfiction. Or rather a little brother comm: it’s going to be called Holmes Minor (holmes_minor), the subtitle being: a playground for little fics and poetry.

This comm would still be dedicated to the ACD Sherlock Holmes ‘verse but we wouldn’t be concentrating on individual ACD stories—we’d just be writing in the ACD Holmes ‘verse in general. And all kinds of microfiction would be welcome, not just 60s. Forms like 6 word stories, 55s, drabbles, double drabbles and 221Bs. Or just anything that had a word count up to 500 words. And as it says in the subtitle, poetry would be welcome too. Our initial idea is that we might have monthly prompts.

Would you be interested in joining us in this new comm?
[identity profile] thesmallhobbit.livejournal.com
On behalf of all those involved with this little community, Mr Holmes, I would like to wish you a most Happy Birthday.

Please accept this beautiful Epiphany Tart, made by [livejournal.com profile] okapi1895, one of our members, as a token of our affection.

For anyone who is interested, the jams contained therein are blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, cherry, apricot, peach, and fig.

We encourage all members, visitors and even hangers-on with an interest in Dr John Watson (and who amongst us does not have such an interest) to make haste to visit [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes for their July Writing Prompts which begin on July 1st.

We have been assured Mr Sherlock Holmes himself will be in attendance.

Making your New Year's Resolutions?

Why not resolve to join us every week as we work our way through the Arthur Conan Doyle canon stories?

Starting on Sunday 18 January with A Study in Scarlet, we shall be reading through all 60 of the canon Holmes stories in order of publication date.

There are many ways to take part:

  • Write a 60 word drabble based on the story or inspired by it

  • Join in the discussion post

  • Read the drabbles and comment if you wish

  • New this year: Mrs Hudson's poetry page - all forms of poetry welcome, to be posted as a comment on the page

Any questions or still not sure, feel free to contact one of the mods: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles and [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit
