A Possible Mirror Comm for Sherlock60

You may recall my personal journal was recently temporarily suspended due to it erroneously being flagged as a source of spam. This had the side-effect of all my posts also temporarily disappearing from sherlock60.

Which brought home to thesmallhobbit and I just how vulnerable the comm is. A great many people, past and present, have put an awful lot of work into sherlock60 and we really don’t want to risk any of that being lost.

Therefore, we are proposing to import a copy of the comm over to Dreamwidth, and then to re-import it at regular intervals as new content is added. (This mirror comm would just be a record, rather than an active community—we would be continuing on LiveJournal.) Before we do anything though, we want to see how everyone feels about this.

I must emphasise that no-one with a live account on LJ would lose control over their copied posts and comments at the Dreamwidth sherlock60. All authors will still be able to manage them using OpenID via LiveJournal. I was thinking that it would be a shame to lose this round's discussion posts with all your marvelous links. They are an incredible (and organized!) resource for ficcing. So, any effort to maintain that, I support.

But on a tangential note, I'm not planning on getting a Dreamwidrth account myself unless there's a really, really good reason (my AO3 and this one is enough for me).

I do actually have all my discussion posts stored in files, so they could have been recreated elsewhere if necessary. But I would have hated to lose all the comments underneath them ^^" I like to think that the comm as a whole will always stand as a useful resource for ACD Holmes fans - and everyone who's posted or commented has contributed to that.

You really don't need to get a Dreamwidth account if you don't want to. I've only got one myself because I'll need it to be an admin for the mirror comm. LJ is still home for me ^__^

I'm mostly a lurker, but I do think it's a good idea. These be troubled times and taking out a little insurance by mirroring the comm on DW seems sensible. (If a lot of trouble for you!)

My bit of bother brought it home to me that it isn't really our comm. LJ are the landlords and they can do whatever they like with it.

I hope LJ carries on for a good while yet, but it does seem wise to make a copy of our content while we can. And to be honest, making a mirror comm looks perfectly straightforward ^__^

I think it's an excellent idea. And having done it, I can confidently state it's pretty darn painless to do the import over on DreamWidth.

I have had a go at importing my own personal journal, and that did seem completely straightforward. I'm rather relieved to hear it's the same for comms ^_^

Btw, while I've got you here, I just wanted to apologise for dropping out of WAdvent without saying anything. I kind of lost my nerve about writing during that period but I kept hoping a reasonable idea would turn up.

It's a straightforward way to archive the comm, and things on the internet that aren't archived somewhere... Well, they have a tendency to stop being on the internet.
