Btw, it always strikes me that ACD seems to have made Barker an amalgam of Holmes and Watson.

Not a good idea to annoy someone with such a gift for description, that's all I'm saying.

Barker does seem to embody both men. Maybe during a Surrey visit Holmes and Watson left some DNA ... er, somewhere, together, if you know what I mean... and it mutated.
