Canon Story: The Adventure of The Blue Carbuncle

Author’s Notes: I wanted to write about the carbuncle and wrote a tanka that was too short. Next, I spent far too much time researching carbuncles and found out that this type of gem doesn’t exist. For the sake of this 60, my sanity, and my attempt at being scientifically correct, I’ve made it a sapphire.


Organized structure of aluminum and oxygen was formed during the slow cooling of magma. The temptation to possess was instantaneous compared to the millenia it took to form the crystallized structure. This nucleating agent, the gem, encouraged growth of crystals in the form of greed and corruption. As impurities turned the color blue, its presence poisoned the ones around it.

Lol, so you are sensing my frustration? And why did it take me a djdjcjsnhr week to write 60 words?!? Ahhh! I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that struggles. I’m just happy that I got it done before Sunday.

We all get frustrated with ACD. Once in a while, I got frustrated with the 60, but I only did 1 and 1/2 rounds. My problem is lack of time and energy to get all the ideas down.

Thanks. October is a very inspiring month with Halloween and Kinktober. Really, the whole of autumn is good for me. And I have a personal goal of getting 1 million words in my AO3 account by Dec. 18 (which marks my fourth year as a ficcer) so I have extra motivation right now. I'm about 54k short right now.

Lol, Yes! And it drives me nuts. I need to keep reminding myself that this is fiction and doesn't have to remain true to facts... Sigh, I'll get over myself soon. :)

The term nucleating agent was the inspiration for the for the 60 and I had to wrestle with it to keep it in. I'm thrilled you loved that part.
