Notes: All this occurred during the first month of the long vacation. I went up to my London rooms, where I spent seven weeks working out a few experiments in organic chemistry.

He reached his place at midnight
Floorboards creaked and door squeaked
His small room a welcomed sight
Relieved from tension and an odd guest
He might rest well tonight

His room illuminated by moonlight
On his desk, something caught his eye
A dog collar, broken, gleamed so bright
He sighed as he remembered
All that happened because of a bite

Holmes returning to his rooms is a great part of the story to focus in on. Echoing debriswoman and Okapi - what a poignant mixture of relief and regret Holmes must be feeling at that moment.

Absolutely, so many different emotions are going on and would continue while trying to focus on anything else. Chem experiments can have lots of waiting periods that could lend to reflection time.
