I had not lived with Watson six days before I had accurately assessed his character: brave, unassuming, adventuresome, loyal. Within six months, I had somehow come to depend on these things, along with his willingness to obey my commands unquestioningly.

It was a shock when he flatly refused to let me venture to Milverton’s alone. Loyalty and bravery out-trumped obedience.

Watson is not a puppy, he is a partner. Perhaps this is the moment Holmes realizes Watson is an equal partner in their venture, and beyond that, an equal partner in Holmes' life entire. I imagine that would be quite a shock to him, but a good one, and one he needs more than he would ever admit, even to himself.

Exactly this. I've always loved this moment of outright defiance of Watson's - complete with a touch of pawky humor - and I wanted to play with it a little. Thank you!

I loved this bit in CHAS. Their words have such a symmetry that cuts right to the heart of everything their relationship is about: loyalty, friendship, care, bravery.

"You are not coming." "Then you are not going."

And then Holmes accepts it with an acknowledgement that while they may end up in jail for this, one thing will not change. They'll still be together. Just brilliant work by ACD and I'm so glad you touched on it here!

Thank you so much! The development of their relationship into true partnership isn't something canon!Watson would (or did) dwell on, more's the pity, but I do think this was one of the seminal moments for them. :-)
