Holmes observed his friend and the surrounding newsprints before the latch clinked into place. The rest he had hoped would ease Watson’s pain minimally helped. Perhaps another method would suffice.

He read the gaudy letter intending to discard it immediately, such a commonplace affair, but Watson was noticeably curious about it. Watson’s day of reading could prove to be useful.

Awww. Just as Watson looks for cases to keep his friend from dark moods and the needle, Holmes takes less-than-interesting cases to distract his friend from his war injury.

Absolutely. IMHO, there wasn't much reason for Holmes to take this case and poor Watson was bored and in pain.
