Never have I seen a worse-provisioned ship than that steamer. The beef was second-rate and that was bad enough, but when Holmes and I discovered that the gin was gone we almost panicked.

Two days at sea without a dram. We took a great deal of vindictive pleasure in arresting Hans the Forger when we docked, then hit a pub.

Oh, crikey - that last phrase ...we docked, then hit a pub. It made me laugh for about two minutes straight ^____^

Also greatly enjoyed but when Holmes and I discovered that the gin was gone we almost panicked. Certainly one of the most original versions of "the shocking affair of the Dutch steamship Friesland" I've ever read ^__^

Hee hee. Yeah, a couple of red-blooded English men of the Victorian era might as well be starving if they were going without a proper drink. Naturally they'd need to fortify themselves as soon as possible.
