The crowd swarmed at the house as Irene's carriage appeared. Holmes hid his smile as he stepped forward—

"OUTTA THE WAY YOUSE BUMS!"

That brassy directive, sent in a coloratura's trumpet, physically parted the street crowd. Holmes recoiled and Watson covered his ringing ears as Mrs. Norton strode into her house undisturbed.

He'd forgotten she was born in New Jersey.

New Jersey - aka the unfashionable address for women unable to swing a socially-acceptable New York City birth. SHe'd have to be smart and tough to climb the ladder to respected opera diva - and very likely have a few patrons as lovers.

Just once I'd love to see a production of SH that absolutely takes Adler-Norton's NJ birth and upbringing into account. Maybe not Snooki-level Joisey-shore lifestyle, but definitely smart and tough to rise in a world where she's already considered lower-class for not being a New York City-born society woman. And she'd hardly be the first female performance-artist of the time who likely slept with a few of her wealthy patrons to survive.
