Within twenty-four hours after the case was solved, Alexander Holder brought the broken coronet to Her Majesty's goldsmith and spent a fortune on discretion and superb craftsmanship. Within two hours after his release from prison, Mr Holder had paid Arthur's debt to the club.

It took him days to find the right words to say I'm sorry to his son.

And even when he managed that, there was a sense that he held his son responsible in some way, although it was entirely unreasonable to do so.

It does seem from the story that Mr Holder had a very fixed and rather negative view of his son. Holmes, to the contrary, was so enthusiastic about Arthur's action that I started to disbelieve what Mr Holder told us. :)
