REIG -- The Reigate Puzzle

What had happened?

The question haunted me as the train rattled along. The telegram had been all too terse.

Holmes had declined my assistance for the Continental portion of the case, citing the impossibility of my leaving my practice. But that did not stop me from bitterly regretting not being at his side, and vowing to avoid another such mistake.

I was deeply touched and also worried by this part of the story, and it's great to see a more direct, personal account of what Watson feels at that point. Especially the last sentence goes right at it.

I think it does, and I liked reading your lines because this part is so rushed in the original story. Rushing at the beginning easily leaves the reader confused, or in my case, rotating around the ceiling lamp. So, I'm glad you couldn't resist. ;)

I do like the way Watson drops everything to go to Holmes. I like the way you've captured his anxiety during the journey.

Poor Watson, you captured his anxiety beautifully.

I can well imagine Watson's regret at not being at Holmes' side with a case that took a toll like this. Those 24 hours of travel must have been painful and tense for him. Well done!
