RETI -- The Adventure of the Retired Colourman

After Inspector MacKinnon’s departure, I settled back into my chair, a warm glow suffusing my entire body like the finest brandy. “That was uncommonly kind of you, Holmes.”

“What, to let the Inspector take the credit? Hardly.”

“No.” I cleared my throat. “You were remarkably complimentary. ‘Astute,’ ‘invaluable…’”

“Ah.” Holmes flushed. “Well, my dear Watson, credit where credit is due.”

Aw, Watson's pleasure is so tangible here, as is Holmes' reaction to it. Nicely done!

Thank you! Holmes' compliments to Watson (at least when talking to the Inspector) are really striking in this story. I can't imagine Watson not being chuffed. ;-) Then again, after having to put up with Amberley for that trip, he deserved every bit of flattery Holmes could offer!

It is, isn't it? And although he had one of his more typical "you could have done more" rebukes earlier in the story, he's really complimentary to Watson at the end.
