He had all he wanted. He never thought, not for a second, of what she might desire.

Thanks. Raised all my feminist hackles, Victorian social milieu notwithstanding, although from the sound of it she was caught in a different patriarchal trap all the same :-(

Oh, excellent. I love this take on it, and also the shadow that hangs over it. The only choice we ever see her make for herself is certainly a serious mistake. But she was finally able to follow her own desire, after so long without choices.

And possibly precisely *because* she had had no practice in making choices or understanding real world consequences, the first one she made probably backfired. But who knows for sure, we only have Holmes' opinion to go on.
