With little to entertain me on that interminable trip to Little Purlington, I gloomily pondered Holmes’s final instruction, trying to make sense of it. Clearly things weren’t as they appeared on the surface if Holmes believed Amberley might refuse to make a trip which could give him the information he sought. Once more it seemed I had missed something vital.

Always being reminded of the misses must be very hard for Watson, whose profession relies so much on diagnosis. That trip though was almost cruel. I hope Holmes made up for it, with some puppy-shaped cupcakes or whatever. =P

You're right, it must have been wearing on Watson to always be told how he missed the mark. I, too, hope Holmes makes up for what he put Watson through in this one. Thanks. :D

Poor Watson, always made aware of his own perceived failings - and then having to play 'companion' to Amberley to boot!
