Watson accepted my explanation for waiting until morning to return to Briony Lodge without question, as I knew he would. It allowed me to convince him to spend the night at Baker Street once more; for the sake of convenience, or so I led him to believe.

Thus I failed—the price of distraction.

Clever Holmes is clever. I actually think the scheme might have been much broader, helping every client involved to their utmost satisfaction, as far as Holmes is concerned. Splendid story idea!

Oh, I like this explanation quite a bit! Nice job reading between the lines here. But a) did he really fail? The true victim in this case finds herself in a better place at the end and b) do you think Watson stayed more than just the one night, or did he immediately go back to his domestic bliss with Mary?

a) I think Holmes' sympathies were most definitely with Irene. However, he doesn't like his thunder stolen ;) And assuming he did let his feelings for Watson overrule his better judgement, I think he might consider the outcome, while not unfavorable, still a lapse on his part. YMMV, of course. :)

b) Hmm. I would imagine Watson would go back to his wife once the case was complete... but with some wistfulness (not that he would ever admit to such). I'd love to see a fic that has him staying longer, though!
