That night I was happy, for I had my letter, and I had not seen yet what the future would bring.

Eduardo Lucas left London at first light, and was on the continent by midday.  Afraid that he would be pursued once the theft of the letter was known he lost no time in selling it to those he thought would give him the highest price.

The war which followed demanded a yet higher price from many men on both sides.

Thank you. It just struck me that because one haughty woman had thought more of her own happiness and hadn't considered the consequences of her actions she could have caused untold damage.
