Watson, John Hamish (M.D.)

Born 1852 (Berkshire). Graduated 1878 (London). Spent youth near Ballarat. 1880 - Fifth regiment; later attached to 66th Foot. Shot, 27th of July. Shoulder shattered subclavian grazed (recovered: Peshawar hospital - enteric fever). Gambler (wound pension on racing.) Played three-quarter for Blackheath (thrown over ropes and into crowd at Old Deer Park)

This is surprisingly moving. You can just imagine Holmes hesitating over the inadequacy of his summary of Watson, then going back and adding that one word to the entry.

I have this image in my mind that friend is written in a different script, maybe added after. Years later, perhaps, scribbled in one night when (possibly drunk) Holmes realized he wasn't alone anymore.

I love this one -- it moved me.
