Title: Alone
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sherlockholmes
Rating: PG
Character(s): Sherlock Holmes, mentions of Watson and of Holmes/Trevor
Summary: Holmes reflects on which parts of the story he had to omit when recounting it to the good doctor.
Word Count: 60
Author's Notes: I joined late during the first go-round and fell off towards the end because of other commitments and general summertime travel and adventure. I'm back, now, and I'm very excited to be participating again. The inspiration of this story, I'm a bit ashamed to admit, comes from the end of the atrocious film, Young Sherlock Holmes. Without further ado, here is the fic:

The simple truth, I could never share with Dr. Watson. As fair-minded as he is, it would be cruel to compromise his opinion of me by peddling tales of boyhood romance. I did not know then, as I do now, that Victor’s leaving would bring me a lifetime alone. Though looking back, I imagine I would not change a minute.

I loved that movie! Of course, I'm sure if I watched it now I would understand the atrociousness of it...

Lovely ficlet!

I wish I'd watched "Young Sherlock Holmes" as a child, rather than in my early twenties - instead, I just think of it as rather appalling ^^ That said, this is a lovely moment of reminiscing, especially Holmes feeling he would change nothing of his life.

I've never seen the movie, but this seems a very appropriate train of thought for Holmes. I especially like the balance between his regretfulness over being alone and his recognition of how important that was in shaping the person he is today.

Welcome back! Good to see you at the comm again, and with such a nifty bit of 60 words to boot!

a lifetime alone

So sad, but it's fascinating that he feels certain it was for the best. He made his life the way he wanted it, even if that way was a lonely one. Excellent character work.

(Oh, and I've never seen Young Sherlock Holmes, but your description of it as "atrocious" really makes me want to check it out. I have such a taste for the awful and ridiculous...)

That was my exact reaction to the word atrocious as well. I was very much, "oooh, now I have to see that!". It is a sickness. :)

I haven't seen Young Sherlock Holmes but without the reference I thought this story worked very, very well which says a lot about the writing of it. Well done!

Oh, love the hint of bittersweet that comes through, despite Holmes' matter-of-fact tone. Thank you for sharing :)

Nice bit of writing! I usually imagine Holmes as having few regrets - at least not any that keep him down.

Ah~ this is complex, this is intriguing. A very interesting take on the whole sexuality debate, though now I guess I must wait for the next TV round of "Young Sherlock".

'Alone' is a funny word, isn't it. Sometimes all you really need is a flatmate.
