It’s not every cab horse that gets to be driven by a detective inspector.  For some reason my regular driver was riding inside, perhaps he wasn’t well, there was a doctor with him.  But the inspector told me it was to do with the tall thin gentleman, who was quite a clever chap, although his methods were a bit strange.

What an unusual day/night for a cab horse indeed! And it's very good of the detective inspector to explain things to his four-legged fellow. Communication is everything.

Lestrade seemed quite confident in driving the cab, which implied past experience with horses. I assumed therefore that he would talk to the animal, reassuring it with his voice and the most logical thing he would talk about would be what was happening.

Is this Lestrade's opinion of Holmes which he related to the horse, or did the horse draw that conclusion on his own?

Thank you. I think that's what the horse concluded from what Lestrade said, although of course Lestrade's own opinion would come through in how he said it.

One wonders what the horse thought about the quality of the stranger's driving. Also what he did whilst Hope was off killing Drebber. I really do love this series!

Since they made it to Scotland Yard successfully I think the horse thought the stranger's driving was acceptable. As for what he did whilst Hope was killing Drebber, wandered on a bit, found something to eat and then dozed until Hope returned. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you. A cab horse would see a wide variety of life, although I suspect this particular gentleman is definitely of the unusual sort.
