Author's Notes: Originates from Holmes' quote: "This looks like one of those unwelcome social summonses which call upon a man either to be bored or to lie."


The most unwelcome summons had already come, posted despite the fact the groom lived at my address to inform me in calligraphy on fine paper of an event I'd been dreading.

In the end, I was called upon both to be bored and to lie. I departed after an interminable ceremony and my required words.

"Mr. and Mrs. Watson, congratulations."

I think, in this case, Holmes is the more worthy owner of the title "noble bachelor".

It's tragic how the one summoning done by people who love him would hurt him on a level all the other events could never reach. Actually this is pretty chilling.

I doubt they knew how much it would hurt him, and certainly he wouldn't tell them.

Poor Holmes. And even more sympathy for him because I always love to torture him so in these 60s. :)

I love this. So well done. That is a hard invitation, indeed. And he has to go and he has to pretend he is pleased. That particular piece of mail would mean so many changes.

Wonder what Watson thought when he saw it come in the mail. Excited for his day or saddend for the changes, as well?

Ooh, good question. I imagine Watson would have been both excited and anxious. He's gaining a wife, but he's giving up the life and home he's loved so much. There's a story to be told in there somewhere... you've given me a nice plot bunny for later.
