Hi, everybody! Hope you are having a lovely holiday season, be it Christmas, Hanukkah, or Solstice! I expect we'll have some late entries this week with everyone busy, but don't worry about it. Post when you can about this week's story: His Last Bow - The War Service of Sherlock Holmes.

As always, here are some questions and thoughts to get you started. Please add your own!

- Do you think Holmes was enticed to come out of retirement for this job "under strong pressure" from his brother as well as the Foreign Minister and the Premier? Mycroft is never named specifically and his advanced age makes it somewhat questionable. But there are a "half-dozen people in the world who were really in touch with the truth" about Van Bork. Doesn't it seem like Mycroft would be one of them?

- The hints of coming modernity are interesting here, particularly the cars. Baron Von Herling is driven in a "huge 100-horse-power Benz", and Watson drives Holmes/Altamont in a small Ford.

- Holmes and Watson seem to have fallen far out of touch here, sadly. They both seem overjoyed to see each other, but why does Holmes say this "may be the last quiet talk that we shall ever have"? Is he just referring to the coming war here or something else? Do you think they stayed in touch after this or drifted apart again?

- Side note that made me laugh: I love Holmes' disguise goatee and his and Watson's revulsion at it!

Character(s): Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock Holmes, Doctor John Watson
Summary: Mycroft reflects on the mission.
Warnings: Sentiment from an unsentimental man. Some spoilers for LAST.
Word Count: 60, and then some more.
Author's Notes: 60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories. This week, I've also included an "extended play" version, because, y'know, Mycroft.
Disclaimer: I don't own them.

LAST - His Last Bow

My eyes blurred when I saw my brother and Doctor Watson enter my office, arm in arm.

Unsurprising.

Convincing Sherlock to take the case was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. The danger of the mission. Tearing him away from his home. Both knowing that even if he survived, I might not live to see it.

( Want more? This way to the extended-play version... )

So many deaths, so many mothers, wives, children bereft.  Holmes said there was an east wind coming, but even he cannot have known how harsh that wind would be.  Yet, I like to think that by catching von Bork we may have saved some lives and prevented the heartache for a few.

Please, forgive the tears of an old soldier.

Warnings - Implied slash sex

He is everything to me. He is noble, spectacularly handsome, strong, lithe, and incredibly, breathtakingly, clever. Seeing him when he is alive with the chase makes my heart stutter. He knows my mind as intimately as I know his body; we are quite in love.

However, I will not deny that waited until after the goatee was gone to kiss him.
