Warnings: Mention of verbal and physical abuse
Author's Notes: I pondered and pondered over this one.  I finally considered the line of dialogue of the Granada series where Helen Stoner states that Dr. Rylott was " ...the only father"  she had ever known and went from there.  I imagine that verbal abuse as well as isolation would be highly effective in keeping the girls away from suitors.
I shall not mourn this man. His physical violence was nothing to the years of casual verbal cruelty, belittling us for what hopes we had for life outside of his protection.  Without Julia's fighting spirit, I should have cowered, withered.  Only her presence, our shared bond, kept me from despair.  These last years have indeed been lonely, my dearest Percy.

Author's Notes: I'm beginning to notice a trend in the stories I'm writing for this. Let's see if it continues, shall we?

Another dream of Ballarat. Those picturesque hills and blue sky that as a boy come to England I spent my days longing for. I stir, leaving Australia behind for London once more. My eyes open to find Holmes looming above me like a priest over a moribund patient.

The scream I emitted, I admit to omitting from all case notes.

I confess I had wondered why Holmes allowed me to accompany him on his investigations. From what Lestrade and Gregson had told me, he preferred to work alone. But after the harrowing events at Stoke Moran, I understood. He needed someone on whom he could rely in dangerous situations. I could serve as sword for him as well as pen.

Author's Notes: Not much to this one; quite off-topic, a Google search in my part of the world for 'Speckled Band' brings up our local Sherlockian society, which I was rather excited about until I realized they wouldn't be terribly excited about me. Personally, I think any such group that wouldn't have Dorothy Sayers for a member is doing it wrong, but I digress.

Like all wretched men, Roylott found his strength in weakness. A man must have some driving force behind his arm – however powerful he may be – to bend iron to his will, and his was the black, creeping sap of cowardice. He had feared poverty; after Julia, almost as much as destitution he had feared the rope.

The wrong rope, alas.
