( Onward to canon talk - The Resident Patient )
Canon: The Resident Patient (RESI)
Title: The Page and His Brother
Author: ennui_enigma
Rating: G
POV: The pageboy
A/N: What became of the page, of whom Holmes remarked, “He has played a not unimportant part in this drama”? Inspiration from RESI and STOC.
My brother was the brains and mastermind behind our adventures. He found me that position as a pageboy on Brooke Street where we earned quite a penny with only minor inconveniences from the police. I was proud of Beddington’s skills as forger and cracksman. When I read of his capture at Mawson & Williams I knew my future was hopeless.
This is the first time I’ve seen a man behave like this: bending down, picking things up over and over again. He’s not eating them; he’s not a pigeon after all. But there’s clearly a purpose in what he’s doing and he’s very methodical. The others: like any male pigeon, standing round watching with a bemused expression on their faces.
I struck a match, cupping my hand around it as I lit my last candle. My table - an overturned wooden box – wobbled as I wrote my patients' notes. I was forced to wrap myself in one blanket. My breath misted in the air before me, and my fingers ached with cold.
My circumstances could not change soon enough.
RESI – Researches
An imperfect vessel ruined a day’s work.
A swift glance showed me what I had missed during that day: my Watson, peaked, restless, longing to be distracted from himself and his lingering ill-health, but not trusting his own strength enough to venture outdoors alone.
Time to resume another, always more fruitful, line of study. Watson always rewards a careful researcher.
"Ha! The stars are out and the wind has fallen. What do you say to a ramble through London?"
