Canon Story: The Red-headed League
Title: The Best-Laid Plan
Author: [livejournal.com profile] tripleransom
Rating: G
Author's Notes: I took my inspiration from the Granada series and their premise that Moriarty was pulling John Clay's strings.

The Best-Laid Plan

John Clay's plan to steal the French gold was nearly flawless. Had it not been for the fortuitous circumstance of Mr Jabez Wilson calling upon my friend, no doubt the thieves would have got clean away.

But was John Clay indeed capable of such meticulous planning? Or, as Holmes suspected, was there another, more sinister intelligence behind the whole affair?

Jonas Oldacre
Had no need for an undertaker.
At least not for a while.
Not until after his trial.

There is a TV adaptation of the story we are reading this week, The Resident Patient, in the Granada series. It's rather faithful to the story, with some interesting (and quite funny) deviations from the ACD text. If you can't watch the entire episode, do watch the dialogue between Holmes and Watson at the barber shop, starting 03:46. :)

A/N: The Granada adaptation of this story contains one of my favorite bits of 'business' from Jeremy Brett, so I decided to go with it instead of using one of the prompts. Also, I'm jumping the gun a bit, but I won't be around to post tomorrow.

The Last Napoleon

The table was set, the red cloth and service upon it. When Holmes, ever the showman, whipped away the cloth, only a single spoon clattered to the ground. The cloth was flipped with a flourish onto another table, the bust of Napoleon set down precisely.

Moments later, the Black Pearl of the Borgias was revealed, to our stunned applause.
