Let's talk telly in the discussion post for Granada's TV adaptation of The Red Circle. If you haven't seen this episode yet, you can find it at YouTube and on DVD. Follow me behind the jump for my random thoughts and impressions. Please add your own in the comments!

Canon discussion for The Red Circle is available in this week's canon discussion post.

- Holmes is powerfully moved by the life and plight of this former client of his that doesn't exist in the canon story, Fermani. The mention of his name entices him to take Mrs. Warren's case. He is stricken when Watson's visit leads to Fermani's death, and thinking of him later at the opera, Sherlock Holmes even wells up with tears. What is it about this man to bring such emotion from Holmes, who is unsentimental at nearly every other instant? Who was this guy? We know he runs something of a safehouse for his countrymen, but there must be more to it than that, right?

- It's a pretty bad showing for our heroes here. Nearly everything is Holmes and/or Watson's fault. Neither of them are careful enough throughout. Watson visits Fermani and attracts attention and death upon him, as Holmes knew would happen but didn't care to mention. Holmes nearly gets Emilia killed not once but twice. First, despite knowing and mentioning they might be being watched, he leads Gorgiano directly to a secret roof entrance to get to Emilia where Gorgiano is stopped from kidnapping her only by a locked bedroom door. Then he blows off the American detective when he worries for her safety, which allows her to escape to what could easily have been her doom. It's an ugly outing.

- Canon Holmes has a magic ability to soothe people instantly with a touch. Granada tries to replicate it, but fails miserably. Mrs. Warren is flustering and upset, and so Holmes gets up reluctantly and approaches her, as if to say to the room, "Oh, I will put a stop to this if no one else will." He puts his hands on her shoulders and she does immediately stop crying, but that may only be because she is a bit creeped out by him looming so grimly on her shoulders.

- Why is Mrs. Hudson over at the Warrens' all the time? She knows them, I suppose, but she seemed to randomly appear when needed and then vanish again.
