POV: Colonel Hayter
A/N: Prompted by the following sentence. Hayter was a fine old soldier who had seen much of the world, and he soon found, as I had expected, that Holmes and he had much in common.

What a curious fellow Watson’s found. He called himself a 'stormy petrel'. The inspector muttered that his methods were mad. Yet he managed to deduce the solution to William’s murder from a peculiar theft, scrap of paper, and the p’s and g’s of a note. Fascinating! My life in the country is dull. It’s time I travel the world again.

I have always had the good fortune of lacking that propensity for embarrassment that lesser men tend towards and so felt none at all during my debasing and fun deception. The only shame I felt was in the pain and concern I caused my dearest friend and the thrill of delight that his upmost, almost violent, care excited within me.

Author's Notes: There are no apologies.

Mercy Moriarty:
Couldn’t feed Maupertuis to my ladies. Gave them Holmes the Younger instead. Remarkable stamina he has, indeed.

Jane Moriarty:
Getting Holmes out of a den of sirens isn’t something you’re going to forget in a lifetime. I hope I will, anyway.

Professor James Moriarty:
Oh, what fun. Have taken delight in informing Doctor Watson.

Sherlock Holmes:
Can’t walk.

Author's Note: I've been in deep with my story for [livejournal.com profile] acd_holmesfest so I'm far behind on my comments. Sorry, everyone!

"Extraordinary." "Astonishing." "Genius."

Superlatives piled upon superlatives. Telegrams piled upon telegrams. Worthless words and empty praise. What was the point of any of it?

Another knock jolted my attention back to the door. More dismal felicitation, undoubtedly. I threw my best obscene French insults to repel my intruder, but the handle turned anyway.

"Holmes?"

No. Impossible. Couldn't be.

"Holmes?"

"W-Watson?"

Character(s): Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson
Summary: Why did Holmes agree to leave London for the country?
Warnings: Neglible spoilers for REIG.
Word Count: 60
Author's Notes: 60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories.
Disclaimer: I don't own them.
Additional notes: I'm so sorry, everyone. I've been so buried I haven't had time to respond to comments, much less read and comment on everyone else's lovely 60-word fics. Hopefully I'll be back to a more usual level of participation by next week!

REIG – Castle

In the end, I agreed to leave Baker Street on a country visit to Watson’s friend not because I thought it would benefit my health, but for the preservation of his. I could recover anywhere, but Watson’s growing pallor, deeply shadowed eyes, and increasingly short temper with others (never me) indicated that he desperately needed a respite from his cares.
