It's canon discussion time, everybody! What did you think about A Case of Identity? As always, I've written up a few of my own random thoughts and comments, which are behind the jump. Add your own in the comments!

Note: There is no Granada version of IDEN for us to watch this week, unfortunately. But next week is The Red-Headed League, so look forward to that!

Onward to canon talk - A Case of Identity )

Canon: The Man with the Twisted Lip (TWIS)
Title: Silence
Author: ennui_enigma
POV: Watson
A/N: Catching up this week.

Isa Whitney was a pitiable sight when I rescued him from the opium den. Holmes appeared worse. Despite his assurance that he’d not  ‘added opium-smoking to cocaine’ I worried.

While I sat silent in the dogcart pondering my friend’s actions, he remarked, ‘you have a grand gift of silence’. Yes, when matters like his ‘little weaknesses’ weigh upon my thoughts.

Canon: The Five Orange Pips (FIVE)
Title: Coping Mechanisms
POV: Sherlock
A/N: Triggered in part by Chess Ka’s thoughtful contribution last week called, “Guilt”.

Young Openshaw is dead. He has been killed by a remorseless gang of murderers that may or may not be avenged. They have simply disappeared at sea.

It’s at such times that I wish I were the unfeeling, thinking machine my chronicler sometimes portrays. If only I could write and purge myself of these dark thoughts like my friend, Watson.

Canon: A Case of Identity (IDEN)
Title: The Plan
POV: Mr. and Mrs. Windibank
A/N:  A connection between the St. Claire family and the Windibanks?

“My angel, did you hear the news about Mrs. St. Claire’s husband? Terrible! Dressing up like a tramp. His wife didn’t recognize him. Imagine!”

“Ah ha! Wife you are a genius! Now listen to my plan… It’s for the best. Trust me. She’ll never know. If Mr. St. Claire could deceive his own wife, surely a stepfather can his daughter.”

Title: Pride
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spacemutineer
Rating: G
Author's Note: Back on the ball and all caught up again, hooray!

Holmes framed his pain as petty insult, something detached and superficial, wholly separate from the depths of his heart. Even then, he strove to maintain his affected demeanor, attempting to fool himself and me into believing in the aloof machine.

"It hurts my pride," he said.

I allowed the lie. Losing one's first client, or one's first patient, leaves scars.

Canon Story: A Case of Identity
Title: Bedside
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spacemutineer
Rating: G
Author's Note: Comes from Watson's line, "A professional case of great gravity was engaging my own attention at the time, and the whole of next day I was busy at the bedside of the sufferer." The case in IDEN is so hateful that I dreamed of peeking into Watson's medical drama instead.

The boy looked minuscule in his bed. Skinny, red-flushed limbs contrasted against the white sheets, too hot to be covered.

"If the fever breaks by nightfall, I think we can trust in Michael's recovery."

"And if it doesn't, Doctor?" His mother's eyes were as bright and fearful as his.

Watson wrung out another cool compress. At either bedside, they waited.

Title: Failure
Author: Chess Ka
Rating: G
A/N: I love this story, but I always feel so frustrated when Holmes and Watson leave Mary Sutherland with her parents who had behaved so appallingly towards her. I'm afraid I don't help Mary much myself...

Perusing The Times one morning, I read that James Windibank had been convicted of murder; he had fallen into a jealous, violent rage on finding that his step-daughter had become engaged, and had taken her life.

"A cold-blooded scoundrel,” Holmes said, lighting his pipe.

I gazed into the fire. We had clearly not done enough for poor Miss Sutherland.

Title: The Cat from Number 223 (part of The Ocelot Tales)
Author: thesmallhobbit
Rating: G

Some people go into 221 nervously, after much hesitation and leave looking relieved.  Others are angry, for you can hear the bell ring halfway up the street, but leave in a calmer fashion.

Tonight the man looked so sure of himself when he went in; yet on leaving he was running faster than a rat being pursued by a terrier.

Title: Angels of Mercy
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hisietari
Rating: G
A/N: One of Mercy's clearer moments. Usually she talks in binary code.

My dearest sister in her governmental chains of silk may think what she wants about my girls. Whores and thieves we are called, and that is what we are, proudly so. But we are also caretakers. We took care of Miss Mary when no-one else would, and with her short-sightedness she discovered our name and honour: the Angels of Mercy.

“No,” she said, shaking her head.

No, it couldn’t… he wouldn’t… no…

“Madam, I beg you to believe me-“

“Sir,” she raised her voice and jumped to her feet. “I beg you to take your lies away from me. Hosmer promised me. The things he said, the things we shared and what we did-“ her voice broke. “No. Please leave.”

IDEN – An Abstruse Problem

I carefully arranged the equipment I needed for the analysis, hoping that the meticulous study would absorb me. It was a difficult problem, but not as abstruse as the one I must resolve this evening.

The facts are obvious. The solution, much less so – in fact, I cannot yet derive one. Emotions, while elemental, are far less predictable than chemicals.
