It's canon discussion time, everybody! What did you think about the opening of The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapters 1-7? As always, I've written up a few of my own random thoughts and questions, which are behind the jump. Add your own in the comments!

We'll watch Granada's adaptation of HOUN next week when we finish the novel.

Onward to canon talk - The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapters 1-7 )

Notes:
First timer here. I hope I did this right!

Pacing down the yew avenue, where Sir Charles Baskerville met his gruesome end, I seemed to hear the sounds of spectral footsteps still echoing eerily in the shade of the trees. Although it was still dusk, here all was darkness and gloom. Wait! Did I see a faint flicker of phosphorescence? Was that the shadow of ...of a gigantic hound?

If that was Sherlock Holmes, then I’m a pit pony.  I’ve met a good few miscreants in my time and that man is up the top with the best of them.  I know Mr Holmes likes to dress up sometimes, but then he never gives his name.  Stupid driver, making that mistake; my previous driver, Mr Hope he knew better.

A/N: This one is slightly more influenced by a play of the book than the book itself. I just couldn’t resist.

Halfway to Devon there was a moment of quiet when I found myself dwelling on Holmes’ eagerness to be rid of me with some slight hurt. Determined not to dwell on it I stood to reach for my newspaper when a sudden jolt flung me into the lap of Sir Henry. His smile promised a better distraction than solitary reading.

Character(s): Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson, Sir Henry Baskerville (passing mention)
Summary: Holmes erred in his description of Watson. How to rectify the situation?
Warnings: Spoilers for HOUN.
Word Count: 60, plus a quote from the original story in italics. Plus an extended-play version.
Author's Notes: 60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories. Apologies in advance for not responding to any comments in a timely manner; my Internet access is severely limited at the moment.
Disclaimer: I don't own them.

HOUN, Part 1 – Rainy-Day Reflections

“He is not a man with intimate friends.”

I saw Watson’s expression change when I uttered those words, but I set it aside for the time.

It was only later that I recalled my words. My Watson did have one intimate friend – one who had sent him off into a mucky day, and now to certain peril.

Intimate, idiotic, yet repentant friend. I was on the next train.

Extended-play version (100 words):

“He is not a man with intimate friends.”

I saw Watson’s expression change slightly when I uttered those words, but caught up in explaining my train of thought, and distracted by the larger problem of Sir Charles’ demise, I set it aside for the time.

It was only later, after I had sent my Watson off with Sir Henry, that I recalled my words. My Watson did have one intimate friend – one who had sent him off into a mucky day, and now to certain peril.

Intimate, if occasionally idiotic friend – and one capable of reconsidering his plans and mending his errors. I was on the next train.

Title: A Holiday

Author's Note: Obviously Mycroft Holmes and Jane Moriarty on office duty, a few days after the happenings in The Sign of the Four.

“News from Doctor Watson concerning my brother, Jane, and they are not of the reassuring kind. I’m afraid dear Sherlock needs a little holiday.”
“The countryside?”
“I think so. Check with your brother’s network, I am sure he has his fingers in something suitably rural. See if you can add an attractive heiress for the Doctor, it’s worth a try.”
