NAVA – Smoothing the Way
‘Your name is very familiar to me, Mr. Holmes,’ said he, smiling.

In my experience, the higher up in government, the more time wasted trying to gain access. I was mildly surprised when my card gained us immediate entry to Lord Holdhurst. Had Watson’s friend wired ahead, letting him know of our interest in his case?

All became clear with Lord Holdhurst’s warm welcome. He must know Mycroft.

His candor proved it.

Extended-play version (100 words):
‘Your name is very familiar to me, Mr. Holmes,’ said he, smiling.

I anticipated some trouble in gaining an audience with Lord Holdhurst. In my experience, the higher up in government an official is, the more time wasted trying to gain access. So I was surprised when my card gained us immediate entry. I theorized that Watson’s friend had wired his uncle, letting him know of our inquiry.

A plausible theory, but an erroneous one. All became clear when Lord Holdhurst smiled at me, and mentioned his familiarity with my name. Watson did not understand the reference, but I certainly did.

Ah. He knows Mycroft.

That explained his welcome, and his candor.

Mr. Holmes and Doctor Watson were at Briarbrae to find the missing treaty and clear Percy's name. It was a glorious summer day and Mr. Holmes was quite handsome in his white linen suit. Instead of listening to Percy, however, he babbled on about roses. I let him know that he was not here to talk; instead, I expected results.

It’s a good job Mr Holmes was happy just to have found the treaty, for had he wanted it entire he would have been disappointed.  Indeed had Mr Harrison retrieved it he would have discovered it to be worthless.  But we had some excellent bedding and Mrs Squeak boasted for weeks of its superior nature due to the French writing.

Rating: PG for innuendo?

All day in Woking, I could scarcely turn my eyes from Holmes. His straw hat was tilted just so and he looked spectacular in his summer linen suit. I only wished we were back in Baker street so I could take it off him.
Alas for my hopes, Percy returned with me and Holmes stayed behind to solve his mystery.

A/N. I didn't find this story remotely inspiring, so have a moment of Watson and Mary.

"What do you think?"

Mary glanced around my practice thoughtfully. “Very spacious. With your name on a plaque outside it will look most professional.” She glanced at me. “Do not become so busy that you do not see Mr Holmes. You must keep up that which is important to you.”

She really is the best of me.

A/N: I want to apologise for how shoddy my story for The Stockbroker’s Clerk was. That story and I did not get along. However The Naval Treaty and I spent a pleasant evening on the train getting to know each other and came out the other side with one 60 and one drabble so hopefully this will better!

“Watson, I have never heard you speak about anyone so warmly as you do Holmes,” Phelps said as I showed him the spare bedroom. “It has been many years since we saw each other and it is possible you have changed but I think it likely,” he gave me with a knowing look, “that in one particular you have not.”

~

That night I tossed and turned, unable to find peace but it wasn’t just the case that was on my mind. I couldn’t get comfortable; the bed was too large, too empty and far too cold. I wondered how Mary was sleeping in our bed at home. Pondered on where Holmes was staying for the night or if he was even resting at all. But most of all I was thanking my stars that Phelps had not asked why Holmes had been so firm that I be the one to sleep in his bed, rather than in my old one.

Author's Notes: Somehow the writing-on-clothes thing has always been the most baffling point in NAVA to me.

“Put that down!”
Immediately the men let go of their bags, surrounded by policemen. Jane Moriarty opened a bag and sorted through the dirty shirts inside.
“I’ll never understand how Holmes can scribble notes on his sleeves for all the world to see.”
One shirt she put back, writing on its cuff: ‘Hands off other people’s dirty laundry, beloved brother.’
