Author's Notes: Somehow the writing-on-clothes thing has always been the most baffling point in NAVA to me.


“Put that down!”
Immediately the men let go of their bags, surrounded by policemen. Jane Moriarty opened a bag and sorted through the dirty shirts inside.
“I’ll never understand how Holmes can scribble notes on his sleeves for all the world to see.”
One shirt she put back, writing on its cuff: ‘Hands off other people’s dirty laundry, beloved brother.’

Well, shirt cuffs (and collars) were detachable in those days, so you could change them and look clean. (What you smelled like was something else again, I guess.) Anyway, a detachable cuff made a handy note pad, and it was the laundress's look out whether it ever came clean or not.

Oh, no doubt about that. It's just a personal thing of mine, having been raised up to what is almost an obsession about waste reduction. Also, with Holmes bearing so many secrets and being so very neat about his appearance, somehow it just would not fit. But then, that's Conan 'Continuity' Doyle for us.
