This week we’re having a look at the first half of The Valley of Fear. As always, I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion going.

Author's Notes: “I have no more notion than you how long it is to last," Holmes answered with some asperity. "If criminals would always schedule their movements like railway trains, it would certainly be more convenient for all of us.”

Travelling back from Birlstone, our first train was late by an hour and the second by two. We finally arrived back in London past midnight, Holmes somewhat annoyed.

In an attempt to lighten the situation, I said: “You know, Holmes—criminals do schedule their movements like railway trains!”

And that is why I am spending the night at my club.

Author's Notes: "Then to Birlstone we must go!" cried MacDonald. …said Holmes. "While we are on our way, Mr. Mac, I will ask you to be good enough to tell me all about it."

Some readers have raised questions about the setting of this particular story.  When it was first published, it was wiser to let it be thought that it reflected events at the time of the first Professor Moriarty, rather than admit that this was the son of the elder’s cousin, whose reign within the criminal classes was still unfortunately in place.

Author's Note: Title taken from this line: ... that event which has created a void in my life which the lapse of two years has done little to fill.

The image of Holmes standing before a backdrop of Alpine grey and white was burned into my mind. I saw it during those sleepless nights when the police searched for his body. It was the reason for the closing of my practice, and ultimately, the failure of my marriage. With Holmes gone, my life, too, had come to an end.

Sherlock Holmes prided himself on his lack of sentiment, for the sake of pure, crystal-sharp logic. But Sherlock Holmes was no fool. Mrs Hudson's joy upon his return moved him deeply, and when he sat in his chair again, faced with Watson's empty one, he finally admitted to himself how much he'd missed him, this best, this bravest of friends.

At the trap-door's clank a gush of foul air swept through the den. There went Isa Whitney's purse, wrapped in waxed cloth, Holmes assumed. The police would find nothing here. The Thames smelled of mould, wet ash and rain, overpowered by the sewer stink. And for once, Holmes could not claim that he wasn't contributing to this special London odour.
