This week we’re having a look at The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place. As always, I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the ball rolling.

Author's Notes: SHOS was published in The Strand Magazine in 1927.

‘The firm, austere expression of those who have to control horses or boys...’

Holmes laughed, and lowered his periodical to find Mrs. Clitheroe, the housekeeper staring down at him.

“Heavens! The exact expression!” He tossed the Strand onto the floor. “Though you don’t deal with boys and horses, of course.”

Mrs. Clitheroe stooped, retrieving the magazine. “Not horses anyway, sir.”

Author's Notes: "But it was the voice of a man!" I cried.

The actor, Norlett:
Sir Robert’s ruin - he’s helping to stall it.
But a better theatrical choice
Would be someone who could do the voice.

Mrs Hudson did not appreciate Holmes’ experiments with different types of glue.  It did not help that when she complained about the fresh marks on the carpet Holmes had tried to explain to her the significant differences between them.  That might have been why she told him to remove the fishing gear before she found an alternate use for it.

Notes: Watson's PoV.

Not proofread. But since I obviously cannot wait, here it is.

"Watson and I are famous fishermen – are we not, Watson?"

We did actually use our fishing tackle in the mill-stream with the result that we had a dish of trout for our supper.

Sherlock Holmes is a man of many talents, but fishing most definitely does not belong amongst them. Who shall know better than I, who once had the rather unfortunate idea of introducing this pastime to him?

And yet, Holmes is very keen on our occasional fishing trips, oddly contented with the calming nature around us, his pipe and my company.
