Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then be inspired to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

This week my featured form is the fable.

Shadow Poetry gives the following definition:

A fable is a poetic story composed in verse or prose with a moral summed up at the end. Usually using animals as characters to teach a valuable lesson.

In fact, in my fable, I will be using Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as characters.

I make no further comment.

As always, this is simply something to consider for the future. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

221B verselet, abecedarian poetry, acrostic poetry, cinquain, circular poetry, clerihew, concrete poetry, diamante, epigram, fable, haiku, limerick, palindrome poetry, riddle, sedoka, sestina, sonnet, tanka, terza rima, tongue twister poetry, triolet, tyburn, villanelle

Please leave all your poems inspired by The Engineer’s Thumb in the comments on this post. I look forward to seeing them!

Warm regards,

Author's Notes: “Between your brandy and your bandage, I feel a new man…” Brandy! The medicine for all ills!

Holmes poured out the brandy and carefully dosed the patient.

“Yes!” beamed Watson. “A healthier colour already!”

Skilfully wielding the knife, he excised the merest sliver, which he passed to Holmes.

Who popped it into his mouth and chewed thoughtfully.

“Mm,” said Holmes eventually, “much better. The new cook is tolerable, but she simply cannot make a decent simnel cake.”

The public are urged to examine any half-crowns they receive, since a large quantity of counterfeit coins has recently appeared in circulation.  The police suspect they are being manufactured in the Reading area but as yet have been unable to trace the source.  Unlike a genuine half-crown, which is made of sterling silver, these coins are made of an amalgam.

Behind the Scenes

Upon hearing Victor Hatherley's story, I felt a certain thrill. Who could have provided Col Lysander Stark with a description of the exact man – an orphan, a batchelor, and one desperate enough for work not to question too closely – who was so perfectly suited to his purpose.

Immediately, I perceived the sinister hand of Professor Moriarty behind the whole affair.
