Title: The Three Garridebs: But If I Did
Author: gardnerhill
Word Count: 60
Rating: G
Warning: Disgustingly sappy (well, for Holmes)
Summary: Sherlock Holmes had posited a rhetorical question at the end of “Devil’s Foot.”

***

“I have my answer, Watson.”

I looked up, startled at the first words Holmes had uttered since we’d turned Evans over to Lestrade.

“You witnessed it.” He steepled his fingers. “I would, indeed, act as did Dr. Sterndale, or Jefferson Hope, under identical circumstances.”

I blinked stinging eyes.

Identical.

How efficient of Holmes to condense three oft-used words into one.

Story: The Adventure of the Three Garridebs
Rating: Gen
Summary: While in the nursing-home in Brixton, Nathan Garrideb gets an unexpected visit that cheers him.

“G’morning, sir. Here’s my tale…”
“…and that’s how a scoundrel tricked an honest man for what was right under his blessed feet.”
The old man rattled in his chair, then extended a hand. “I am Nathan Garrideb.”
“A fine name.” The visitor bent and removed his hat. “Mine’s Jabez Wilson.”
The old man ruffled the visitor’s ginger locks and smiled.

Author's Notes: He had a cadaverous face, with… dull dead skin… “My doctor lectures me about never going out…” Behind his central table was a large cupboard of fossil bones. Above was a line of plaster skulls... “I had a brother, but he is dead, and female relatives are disqualified.” “I’ll call to-morrow, Mr. Nathan, and see you off to Birmingham.” He was last heard of at a nursing-home in Brixton. A zombie AU.

A ‘bite’ from a zombie’s skull led to (the late) Ezekiel Garrideb having to reinvent himself as Nathan, a long lost brother. But the decomposition progressed and while in Birmingham, Ezekiel’s frontal lobes disintegrated.

“I’ll advertise for his relatives,” his doctor sadly told the nursing home.

It was just unfortunate the transplant would have to come from a female brain.

The bohemian bachelors huddled over inexpensive spirits.  “Poor Garrideb,” said one.

“Prescott weren’t a bad sort at home,” said the collector of unusual beetles.

“Imagine, five million pounds, though.” said the painter.

“Dollars,” said Mr. Dombey, irritating the rest.

None of them wondered about Mrs. Saunders’s sudden holidays or worried when she never returned.  Who noticed caretakers except when needed?

For any readers who wish for suitable edification during their leisure hours, we would recommend a visit to the British Museum.  There, one can marvel at the Assyrian collection, as well as inspect the Rosetta Stone.  And for those who prefer flora and fauna, there is an excellent collection of such items at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington.

Evans felt more than heard the shifting floorboards. Two ageing crusaders aimed steadily at his head. He’d always been short on luck, but skill he had in spades.

He talked, smiled, distracted.

He aimed for the gut, but traded accuracy for speed. The bullet grazed a leg. Nearly missed altogether. A rotten shot.

But also the luckiest of his life.
