“So if we take the clue in Porlock’s second letter…”

I let him ramble as I picked up the telephone.

“…Ha! Now it becomes clearer, Watson! Now to discover which volume Porlock referenced…”

“Thank you.” I hung up. “Police are coming, Holmes. Murder at Birlstone.” At his stunned look, I indicated the first series of digits. “It’s a phone number.”

Title: A Study in Pink
Canon Story: The Valley of Fear, Chapter 1-3
Rating: Gen
Summary: Watson goes to lengths to prove his point.
Author's Note: ...He was clad only in a pink dressing gown, which covered his night clothes...

“I’m inclined to think—“

A forkful of eggs stopped mid-journey to his mouth.

“I should do so.” I sat opposite him, crossing my legs, tugging at the blush-coloured silk.

“Touché, Watson! Yes, everything did hinge on the pink dressing gown. Now, please, return that to the theatrical wardrobe company from whence it came.”

“Gladly.” I sneezed. “Marabou is foul.”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Yours

by Leo Marks

Note from Rachel: [note on the note from Mrs. Hudson: I have reworked Rachel’s personal comment to me, so any awkwardness of phrasing or vocabulary is mine.] This is a code poem, so it fits neatly with the opening chapters of Dr. Watson's story. However, the line in the poem, "death is merely a pause," does seem appropriate for the larger mystery too.

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: riddle poems. (The link will take you back to a previous poetry page.)

But you do not have to use that form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

221B verselet, abecedarian poetry, acrostic poetry, alexandrine, ballad, beeswing, blackout poetry, blues stanza, bref double, Burns stanza, call and response, chastushka, cinquain, circular poetry, clerihew, colour poems, concrete poetry, Cornish verse, curtal sonnet, diamante, doggerel, double dactyl, ekphrasis, elegiac couplet, elegiac stanza, elfje, englyn, epigram, epitaph, epulaeryu, Etheree, fable, Fib, found poetry, ghazal, haiku, Italian sonnet, jueju, kennings poem, lanturne, limerick, lyric poetry, mathnawī, micropoetry, mini-monoverse, palindrome poetry, pantoum, Parallelismus Membrorum, poem cycle, quintilla, renga, riddle, rime couée, Schüttelreim, sedoka, septet, sestina, sonnet, tanka, tercet, terza rima, tongue twister poetry, triangular triplet, triolet, Tyburn, villanelle

Please leave all your poems inspired by The Valley of Fear in the comments on this post. I look forward to seeing them!

Warm regards,

Mrs. Hudson

Il Compagno: A treatise on being a consulting detective’s companion

by Dr. ‘Niccolò’ W.

Patience is needed.

Curb that string of expletives into: “You are a little trying.”

Develop a vein of pawky humour.

And remember: it is better to be feared than loved. If all else fails, hit him over the head with something heavy.

I recommend Whitaker’s Almanack.

Title: The Invaluble Bradshaw (the serialisation of the Private Journal of Dr Watson)
Author:thesmallhobbit
Rating: G

Where would we be without our copy of Bradshaw?  It has indeed proved invaluable whenever a case has meant taking the train to another part of the country.  We may, however, be about to find the answer to this question, since I have just thrown our copy out of the window.  I was aiming at Holmes, but unfortunately missed him.
