Title: The Sign of Four, Ch. 1-4: Covering Tracks
Author: gardnerhill
Word Count: 60
Rating: G
Warning: None.
Summary: Watson attempts to grow a beard.

***

My lover snorted as he read the manuscript. “’Well-gloved’? ‘Untrimmed and unbraided’? ‘A suspicion of white feather’?”

“Did I not describe Miss Morstan sufficiently?” I exhaled. “Holmes, I explained why my creating a fictional wife will protect both–”

Holmes let out a bark of laughter. “My dear, you spent your introduction describing her clothes! What non-inverted man does that?”

Title: The Other Cases
Canon Story: The Sign of Four, Chapters 1-4
Rating: Gen
Summary: We know what's in the Moroccan case, but what's in the other cases?

1. The Turkish case: favourite tobaccos, a generous portion of his perennial; a smaller portion of Watson’s current.
2. The Belgian case: bars of chocolate for Watson for lengthy waits or journeys.
3. The Parisian case: naughty postcards, one of two sets.
4. The Sumatran case: rare poisons.
5. The Indian case: a stack of letters, a pouch of tea, both dry and brittle with age.

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Alone

by Edgar Allan Poe

Note from Rachel: The reasons behind Mr. Holmes's indulgence in cocaine have puzzled many. The good Dr. Watson sometimes talks about his addiction as if it were a demon, a "fiend" that never dies but only sleeps. In this poem, a man looks back on his childhood and into the contradictions of his own heart and mind, remembering the first moment he sensed a dark force on his life's horizon. (Edgar Allan Poe wrote this poem by hand for a girl named, amazingly enough, Miss Lucy Holmes.)

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: the mini-monoverse. (The link takes you back to a previous poetry page.)

But you do not have to use that form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

221B verselet, abecedarian poetry, acrostic poetry, alexandrine, ballad, beeswing, blackout poetry, blues stanza, bref double, Burns stanza, call and response, chastushka, cinquain, circular poetry, clerihew, colour poems, concrete poetry, Cornish verse, curtal sonnet, diamante, doggerel, double dactyl, ekphrasis, elegiac couplet, elegiac stanza, elfje, englyn, epigram, epitaph, epulaeryu, Etheree, fable, Fib, florette, found poetry, ghazal, haiku, In Memoriam stanza, Italian sonnet, jueju, kennings poem, lanturne, limerick, lyric poetry, mathnawī, micropoetry, mini-monoverse, palindrome poetry, pantoum, Parallelismus Membrorum, poem cycle, quintilla, renga, riddle, rime couée, Schüttelreim, sedoka, septet, sestina, sonnet, tanka, tercet, terza rima, tongue twister poetry, triangular triplet, triolet, Tyburn, villanelle

Please leave all your poems inspired by The Sign of Four in the comments on this post. I look forward to seeing them!

Warm regards,

Mrs. Hudson

Author's Notes: “He disappeared upon the third of December, 1878,—nearly ten years ago.” “I had no relative in England.” Well, everyone else has a secret brother…

Her half-brother soon replied:

You had better come out to us, Mary. Catherine could do with help with the children and the house.

She had sent back a polite refusal. This sudden freedom terrified her, but she found herself loath to give it up.

There were other children she could look after.

And perhaps there might be some adventures too.

Title: Miss Mary Morstan (the serialisation of the Private Journal of Dr Watson)
Author: thesmallhobbit

I said to Miss Morstan I would be proud and happy to be of any service to her.  And that remains the case, even though she stands to become one of the richest heiresses in England.  She has captivated me as no other has ever done, and although I shall not be her equal, I shall ever be her slave.

Summary: Holmes an Watson have a late-night discussion.
Warning: Implied snuggles

I relapsed into my chair, kneading the injured leg, with difficulty as my shoulder also had begun to ache.

“Watson?  John?  Where have you gone?”

“I’m here,” I said, stifling a painful grunt.

Sherlock materialized at my side, eyes glittering in concern.  “Surely, John, you should try some morphine.”

“No.”

“At least come back to bed. I’ll help you up.”
