“More spareribs?”

“Holmes, I’m satiated.”

“Then some loin slices? Trotters?”

“No. More. Please.”

“Watson, I own a 400-pound pig that requires immediate consumption.”

“Holmes! The solution is obvious!”

“Some chops, Wiggins?”

“Jest put ‘em next to the brawn and bacon, Mr. Holmes!”

“Did you lads all get ham packages to take home?”

Twenty Irregulars chorused affirmative through full, grinning mouths.

Summary: In which Mister Holmes errs in storing his harpoon in the kitchen

“…and then the stain on the carpet,” said Mrs. Hudson with a sigh.
“And Inspector Hopkins leaving without touching his breakfast,” mumbled Bessie around a mouthful of cold scrambled eggs.
“Best for all that ‘Captain Basil’ and ship’s doctor go on holiday or…” Mrs. Hudson eyed the harpoon in the corner.
Bessie laughed. “You said your whaling days were over!”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

Rachel is still travelling with Mr. Mycroft Holmes but once again, she has managed to telegraph her contribution to me. And so, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, here is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market

By Pablo Neruda, translated by Robin Robertson

Author's Notes: “...And yet he might have kept some tobacco for his friends."

“So, what about a cigar?”

“Yes, that’s…”

Hopkins watched in bemusement as Holmes rose from the dinner table. He followed him downstairs, and then out to the backyard and a windswept shelter.

Holmes smiled. “Mrs. Hudson now insists I confine all tobacco related activities to the ‘smoking room’.

Hopkins frowned. “But why?”

“Because,” said Holmes, “I had a… smoking… room.”

I am not sure why Holmes ...   Nobody is interested in the presence of a harpoon when we could be talking about the best inspector instead.  I was so afraid he would be injured when restraining the unpleasant Patrick Cairns, but fortunately it was not so.  Although he was left a little breathless, I was relieved he had not been hurt.
