It's finally time to for us (and Burke!Watson, who is very excited by the idea) to meet Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's smarter but much lazier brother, and we discover he's played here by Charles Gray. Gray is fantastic as Mycroft, odd and deceptively clever. Even his own brother underestimates him, and he uses his genial, sluggish appearance to get what he needs, pickpocketing Wilson Kemp expertly on the train by pretending to fall upon him and feigning sleep to distract Sherlock long enough to break away from him. I love Jeremy Brett's interaction with him, particularly during their deduction-off, and when he claps his hands to wake Mycroft, who has drifted off to dreamland during Melas' story. By the way, did you get a feeling you'd seen Charles Gray before? You may have, as he was Ernst Stavro Blofeld, James Bond's nemesis in Diamonds are Forever. Check him out in the trailer!
- What exactly was Latimer's plan when he was caught on the train? He takes Sophy and opens the door, but they're on a moving train. Where was he planning to go? Whatever his plan, it ends the only way he could, and he gets sucked out of the train to his death. Everyone is appropriately horrified by his screaming ending, even the usually unflappable Sherlock Holmes.
- Any thoughts about the darker take on Sophy Kratides here? In the canon story, she is a victim along with her brother, but here she is much more of a cold, callous entity. Does the change bother you?

Charles Gray is the best canon Mycroft

The change seems to have been made partly to give her more to do/say, and to fit in with the revised (and IMO better - *cough*HolmeswithhisarmaroundWatsonalsoNoSmokingsmoking*cough*) ending. She came across as more mesmerised with Latimer than not caring about the brother, whatever Holmes' private interpretation - it's clear from later that she didn't know Paul had been killed, though the questions is begged how much she knew about the being starved and ill-treated.
