It should not have surprised me that Holmes had written a monograph on different bicycle tyres.  For now, many years later, he can instantly detect which motor car has passed by purely from the imprint of its tyres.  Holmes has long since abandoned his attempts to educate me in all the subtle differences, disappointed by my complete lack of interest.

Good idea, and very Holmes, those car tyres. Though I can't help sympathising with Watson's lack of interest.

Thank you. You can imagine Holmes beginning to say "the cut on the tread is ..." and Watson instantly letting his mind wander.
