Love the violin love for Holmes here! Nice pick-up of this reference from CARD.

...but you make me wonder what the violin thinks of Holmes' playing... ;-)

I was thinking more of the occasional scraping and discarding, I take Watson at his word that Holmes is mostly a very good player, and that the Strad thinks it's in good hands.
Distinct parallel with a certain ex army medic, of course.
