Canon Story: The Noble Bachelor
Title: A Different Outcome?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] bwblack

Characters: Watson
AN: I find it odd that so close to his own wedding, Watson didn't express some nerves about his own wedding.

A day that promised happiness and celebration had turned into such sorrowful scandal.    Hopes for the future dashed instantly.    Watson thought, at the time, it was the worst possible outcome.

How naive!  As his once brilliant, beautiful bride lay pale, cold, pained, dying in their bed, he could only wish she'd run off to find happiness and health with another.

Rated G - no warnings.

I am chronically skeptical of Watson's marriage(s), but that's just my OTP talking. IDK.

From the text:
"You have been reading the papers diligently of late, have you not?"

"It looks like it," said I ruefully, pointing to a huge bundle in the corner. "I have had nothing else to do."

---

Nothing else to do? I thought, regarding Watson askance. Here he was, a mere twenty-nine days from matrimony, surrounded by every paper that had been delivered to us for the last week. He had no part in the plans of his own marriage, that much was clear. I secretly wondered at his interest in the whole affair.

The little man seemed frantic, obsessed; he had found a wedding dress floating on our lake.  He is sure the wearer must be under the water.

The tall man looks at the surface and knows that the bride is elsewhere.  I can tell by his stance that he does not just see, but he understands.

He glides but paddles underneath.

A/N: “For the only problem we have still to solve is how to while away these bleak autumnal evenings.”

“I have a solution in mind,” I said, attempting a flirtatious smile.

Holmes flung himself out of his chair as if my words scalded him.

“Indeed,” he said. “I have a number of things to do as well. Perhaps you might pay a visit to the future Mrs Watson.”

With that he stalked into his bedroom and slammed the door.

"They were found floating near the margin by a park-keeper..."

It were a proper autumn day, with howlin' winds and rain. It made it damn hard to rake up the leaves. I were standing by the bank, stampin' my feet to warm 'em, when I saw it. By God! It were a weddin' dress. I daren't think what had become of the poor girl who were meant to wear it.

Character(s): Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson
Summary: How does Holmes really feel about the upcoming changes in his life?
Warnings: Neglible spoilers for NOBL.
Word Count: 60, plus a quote from the original story in italics.
Author's Notes: 60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories. Something about the "bleak autumnal evenings" ending of NOBL really resonated with me this week.
Disclaimer: I don't own them.

NOBL – Command

We can't command our love, but we can our actions.

I had but a few weeks left of my Watson’s companionship before he married.

I had always been content with my own company. In fact, I preferred it…before.

Now?  Life would not be the same.

But until he left Baker Street for his own hearth-side, I could – and would – keep us both comfortable and amused.

I picked up my violin.

Extended-play version (100 words):

I had but a few weeks left of my Watson’s companionship before he married.

I have always been satisfied with my own company. In fact, I preferred it…before.

Now? The autumn would be twice as bleak without him, as would the seasons to follow. Life would not be the same.

But Watson would remain my friend, though all else might change. His Mary brought him joy, and what greater gift could I ask for?

Until he left Baker Street for his own wife and hearth-side, I could – and would – keep us both comfortable and amused.

I picked up my violin.

Author's Notes: Originates from Holmes' quote: "This looks like one of those unwelcome social summonses which call upon a man either to be bored or to lie."

The most unwelcome summons had already come, posted despite the fact the groom lived at my address to inform me in calligraphy on fine paper of an event I'd been dreading.

In the end, I was called upon both to be bored and to lie. I departed after an interminable ceremony and my required words.

"Mr. and Mrs. Watson, congratulations."

A/N: My second round of 60s will concentrate on the Moriarty family, which I've based on canon as far as possible, but tweaked a lot due to gaps in canon. You can find a family tree and some explanation in my journal, but please feel free to ask, too.

My dearest Mercy,

with all business settled, I am now finally able to thank you from the bottom of my heart for finding Frank, and restoring him to me. Marriage may have removed me from our Sisterhood, but my oath of friendship stays adamant. Please accept the attached stock certificates as tokens of faith.

I remain very gratefully yours,

Hatty.

A/N: Inspired by the following quote: “Yes, my correspondence has certainly the charm of variety,” he answered, smiling, “and the humbler are usually the more interesting. This looks like one of those unwelcome social summonses, which call upon a man either to be bored or to lie.”

“Holmes, a letter’s arrived.”

“An invitation, I perceive. Watson, pray, read it out loud?”

You are cordially invited to attend the reception of…

“Wait. You can stop there. I won’t go. It’s a rich nobleman’s social gathering. Never interesting. Hours of tedium.”
An impish grin spread across Holmes’ face. “I’d rather be a monkey in the company of Dr. Roylott.”
