I tensed when I saw two shadowy figures heading towards my current location. Could those be that brute Gorgiano’s accomplices? Or just some random passers-by?

Then the light fell upon their faces. I relaxed with relief.

Just the man I need to see! Ever calm, even with ruthless murderer lurking upstairs.

And what’s better, even Mr. Holmes is with him.

It was a couple of weeks later that we were visited by another young lady who had fainted on the Brixton omnibus.  Holmes assured her that the rat was purely being polite when he raised his hat to her and had no intention of causing her any harm.  I am not at all sure that the young lady was convinced.

Author's Notes: …Sherlock Holmes… turned back to the great scrapbook in which he was arranging and indexing some of his recent material... The two forces made him lay down his gum-brush…

Holmes finished pasting material into his scrapbook, and then steepled his hands underneath his chin in a familiar gesture. I knew better than to disturb my friend when he was thinking and so I turned my attention to my newspaper.

An hour later, Holmes sighed.

“You’ve solved the problem?” I asked.

“No,” said Holmes. “My hands are still stuck together.”

This week we’re having a look at The Red Circle. As always, I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the ball rolling.

Discussion continues... )

This Sunday, 19th October, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Adventure of the Red Circle.

And so we have a landlady worried by the behaviour of her eccentric lodger... But enough about Mrs. Hudson's problems.

A Mrs. Warren comes to see Holmes about her mysterious tenant - a young man who never leaves his room or shows himself, and communicates with her solely through terse notes. Just what is the lodger's secret?

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story inspired by it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it.

We also offer a second challenge: pick a character from ACD’s story and write a clerihew about them. You can choose to write a 60 and a clerihew, or you can do one or the other. (There's further information about posting on our profile.) Or you can just take part in the weekly discussion. All options are absolutely fine!

Hope to see you on Sunday ^^

Author's Notes: Bickering like an old couple is one of my favourite tropes to write.

“My, Mr Holmes, are we turning a little to the sentimental side?”
Mycroft wasn’t entirely sure how to interpret Jane’s comment, or whom it was directed at – himself, or his brother. He put down Watson’s report.
“You have read it?”
“Of course. I love to get the galley proofs. Oh Sir, I wish that just sometimes you were as sentimental.”

Author: [livejournal.com profile] hisietari
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Funny office stories are too much of a temptation.

Old Abrahams was a spider – or a dynasty of them – living in the antechamber of Mycroft Holmes’s office, where Jane Moriarty resided. He became the synonym for her mood as, whenever the latter sank, she would try to kill the beast. Such occasions influenced the city’s criminal activity to such an effect that Abrahams’s wellbeing got its own filing cabinet.

Author's Notes: Thought Jane deserved more cool half-world scenes. Now, what may have moved her to step into her sister's little footsteps...?

They had handled Kitty’s case with mildness, and yet the sentence could only be prison. She wished that it had been life-long, for what was she to do upon her release? Slowly she climbed into the police wagon.
A woman sat inside.
“Good morning, Miss Winter,” she said. “I thought you might be interested in a minor governmental accounting position.”

Title: Methods

Author's Notes: Jane isn't the one for technical knowledge, but she sure as hell has the contacts to make a lazy department a very uncomfortable place.

“Hypnotically soothing? I’d say hypnotically antiquated,” Mary Holder chuckled whilst filing away the latest of the Doctor’s reports. Kitty Winter shrugged.
“Everyone has their method. To Holmes it’s hypnosis, to Doctor Moriarty it’s employing us scum.”
“Exactly. If you’d be so kind as to go back to work now,” the freshly installed intercom system, one of Jane’s latest toys, snarled.

O/N: It has been noted that our contributors frequently complain about the arrival of Mr Holmes and Dr Watson.  It would appear that the same is once again true.

I moved into this flat because I wished for some peace and quiet and no-one lived here.  Dead bodies are okay, they don’t move around and the other Italian didn’t stay.  But having people burst into the room, practically fighting to be the first one through the door, and holding long conversations, is too much.  I’m going to live elsewhere.

Summary: Holmes speculates on how the Luccas will fare after the case.
Warnings: Very mild spoilers for REDC.
Word Count: 60, plus an extended-play version (100 words)
Author's Notes: 60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories.
Disclaimer: I don't own them.

"Well, Mr. Gregson," said the American, looking across at the official, "I don't know what your British point of view may be, but I guess that in New York this lady's husband will receive a pretty general vote of thanks."

"She will have to come with me and see the chief," Gregson answered. "If what she says is corroborated, I do not think she or her husband has much to fear."

REDC – Not Much to Fear
In truth, I was not entirely sanguine about how well the Luccas might fare with Scotland Yard. British law is often inelastic.

Fortunately, the Pinkerton man provided Mrs. Lucca excellent counsel. Nor did he seem much surprised when she quietly disappeared from official view soon afterwards.

I hear San Francisco is a wondrous city for those seeking a fresh start.

Extended-play edition (100 words):
In truth, I was less sanguine about how well the Luccas might fare with Scotland Yard than I let on to either Watson or Gregson. British law is nearly as inelastic as the terrible choices presented to the pair.

Fortunately, the Pinkerton man must have thought the same. He provided Mrs. Lucca excellent counsel, and together with Gregson, smoothed her way through the initial interview. Nor did he seem much surprised when the lady quietly disappeared from official view.

I have heard San Francisco is a wondrous city for a young couple and their elderly parent making a fresh start.

She waited.

She sat still even as she wanted to flinch from every dark haired man and hide from every Italian word she heard. She stayed, her eyes fixed on where Gennaro had walked away and where he would - soon - return. She waited for when he would come back with news of lodgings; where she would wait again.

Hello, friends! Welcome back. Let's have some fun. For this Sunday's Sherlock Holmes canon reading and writing pleasure, we'll be taking on The Red Circle. When a landlord has an issue with her tenant, Sherlock Holmes is so bored he nearly refuses the case. By the end, he'll be glad he was able to be persuaded.

We'll be discussing the Granada TV adaptation of The Red Circle as well on Sunday. You can catch it on YouTube and DVD.

Here are your completely optional prompts for REDC. Feel free to use one, both, or neither.

Optional prompt #1: colour and shape

Optional prompt #2: Use a literary quote in some way.

Haven't joined us for 60 for 60 before? We'd love to have you jump in too! Everyone is welcome. You can learn more here (including the schedule), but the basics are easy: read the story, then write a 60 word ficlet inspired by it. That's it! It's fun, it's quick and you'll love reading both the wonderful classic canon and the terrific variety of fic we all come up with. Come have fun with us! Thanks, see you Sunday!

Mrs Warren hasn't quite my long experience as a landlady. Had I been in the room, I should have guessed her tenant wasn't a gentleman quite as quickly as Mr Holmes did.

Doing everything for himself? Why, a certain world-renowned detective wouldn't know what to do with a bar of laundry soap even if it hit him in the face.

Author's Notes: Sorry for being so late with this, I just discovered this community. (^^;)

Here I was, assuming Watson to have been able to smell a female from two miles away. This case had brought us all more of an education than even I could have expected. Maybe I should enhance his share by future practise - sample collections of odours could hardly occupy more than half the kitchen, could they? A fascinating idea.

I watched as Holmes reassured our prospective client. At one time, I had been well acquainted with his calming touch. Often had those cool, thin hands gentled me out of nightmares filled with the smell of gunpowder and the screams of injured men and horses. From the look his grey eyes flashed at me, I knew he remembered as well.

I once knew everything about my friend. I could deduce the thought behind each expression. I could tell from his footsteps on the stairs whether he was happy, or sad, or weary.

Now I am learning about my lover: new expressions to commit to memory, and ways to induce happiness instead of merely observing it. Education, it seems, never ends.
