Author's Notes: …I had given a promise that "The Adventure of the Second Stain" should be published when the times were ripe… But when you compare the details given in NAVA with SECO itself, Watson appears to be talking about two different cases…

Holmes stared at my manuscript.

“The Second Stain? I gave my word we wouldn't make it public yet!”

“No, I said, “this isn’t the Second Stain. It’s the other Second Stain. I wouldn’t write about the first Second Stain, but this is the second Second Stain. So it’s fine.”

“Oh,” said Holmes. “Well, it’ll all come out in the wash.”

This week we’re looking at The Second Stain. As always, I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion started.

This Sunday, 27th April, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Second Stain.

The story opens with the Prime Minister and the European Secretary at Baker Street. A sensitive document has gone missing - the only person who can prevent a probable war is Mr. Sherlock Holmes...

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story based on it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it.

We also offer a second challenge: pick a character from ACD’s story and write a clerihew about them. You can choose to write a 60 and a clerihew, or you can do one or the other. (There's further information about posting on our profile.) Or you can just take part in the weekly discussion. All options are absolutely fine!

Hope to see you on Sunday ^^

P.S. The week after, 4th May, we’ll be looking at the first seven chapters of The Hound of the Baskervilles. A bit of advance warning in case you want to get started reading now!

Woefully behind and catching up:

Title: Accounting
Canon: The Second Stain
author: bwblack

Lady Trelawney Hope disagreed with Doctor Watson's accounting. The stain on the carpet was, in fact, the second stain. The first was on her character failing to trust her dear husband with the details of her youthful indiscretions. The final stain was found not on the floor, but rather on the good doctor for revealing the first in his memoirs.

Sitting hunched over his desk trying to cram the seven letters of the word quarter into a space meant for four, Cunningham should have began suspecting that his young son Alec had difficulty in planning ahead. However, it was not until until he heard people rush in to save the detective that he truly understood the cost of Alec's impulsiveness.

Author's Notes: At the end of the story, Watson describes the Prime Minister’s eyes as “wonderful”. My notes read: “WTF?” Mocking thus ensued.

“Holmes, you are staring at me.”

“I am conducting an experiment.”

“Do elaborate.”

“Very well; describe my eyes.”

“Piercing? Unblinking? Studious?”

“Not…wonderful?”

“You looked at my notes again.”

“Of course! I must ensure their accuracy.”

“Then should publication ever become a possibility, I shall certainly mention your fetching smile.”

“Best not, Watson. You could make the Prime Minister quite jealous.”

John blinked and considered.

“Yeah, all right.”

Author's Notes: This started out one thing and ended up somewhere very different. I don’t think I wrote this as much as it wrote me.

The door echoed out the heartbeat of my days. Slams marked lonesome homecomings. Knocks were adventures in the making. Wiggins’ quick rat-a-tat-tat, Lestrade’s fist banging an impatient one-two-three, or the shy and uncertain tock-tock of a client.

Every sound brought me hope, frustration, and ultimately boredom. Only the tap of his step on the stair, coming home, brought me joy.

A/N: It's such a great moment when Holmes springs into action here. It was fantastic in the Granada episode as well. It's also a nice subtle moment when Holmes uses his ability to disguise himself in a slightly different capacity.

*****

Of course I was curious what had sent Holmes into such a state, scrabbling frantically at the floorboards. However, I had already learned it was best to obey, and obey quickly, the orders being snapped at me. Explanation could be expected later. It was all I could do to hide my grin just an instant afterward. Bored to death indeed!

“Watson! In the same sentence as you have mentioned my dislike for fame, you have practically published our address! Do you want every so-called fan and fervent acolyte scouring the New Forest for elderly rose breeders?”

“Oh, very well, Holmes. I shall change it.”

A bee flies past and Holmes flinches away, scowling. Watson gives a secret smile.

A/N: I was struck by Watson saying, in the beginning, that this was a few weeks prior to his own wedding, and wondered how that might affect his opinion of the case.

Holmes’ words set a fire loose in my brain. I saw our noble bachelor through a different lens. I had not considered the case in the light of my own impending nuptials. Now I found the thought of losing a wife, after all I had gone through to win her, harrowing. I prayed I would not have the same experience.

"There is always evidence left behind. In this case, a stain. In others, ash, a footprint, a scrap of fabric--" Holmes said with a flourish of his hand before he reached across the table to reclaim the teapot.

"A bite mark, Sir?" Lestrade tipped his chin upwards, his face alive with smugness.

"Or that." Holmes said without concealing his smirk.

Watson believed "the most lovely woman in London"; I did not. A Duke's daughter and a cabinet minster's wife could not conceivably be so innocent about politics. Lady Hilda had been about to run off with Eduardo Lucas, taking the letter as her dowry, when his wife intervened. Yet I held my tongue rather than destroy Trelawney Hope's marriage myself.

SECO – Qualifications

"Then I will tell you, relying entirely upon your honour and that of your colleague, Dr. Watson. I may appeal to your patriotism also, for I could not imagine a greater misfortune for the country than that this affair should come out."

Until that moment, I thought the Premier arrogant and narrow-minded, but not unintelligent. Such was the evidence, and so I reasoned until he spoke those words.

I knew then the man was an idiot savant. To realize that he could rely entirely on our honour was wise. To think that he had to appeal to my Watson’s patriotism – pure idiocy.

"You may safely trust us."

A/N: My second round of 60s will concentrate on the Moriarty family. You can find a family tree and some explanation in my journal, but please feel free to ask, too. Knowledge of previous stories might be required.
Narrated from Sherlock Holmes's perspective. This one's a bit more complex than advisable in sixty words, so I'm rather leaving it here as an experiment. But there's a very short explanation here.

---

The incident revealed a much greater net than Watson would report. In this bizarre rondo of relation, an eldest brother, already too sure of his henchman’s success, would be precluded by his family’s Mercy. One of her countless agents among wives and courtesans released the document, while the advises the sister in Mycroft’s employment gave to Lady Hilda returned it.

A/N: There were a lot of unanswered questions and loose ends in this canon for me.

“Holmes, do you really believe the wife killed Lucus? The valet, Mitton might not have walked home as he claims. Or Mrs. Pringle, the housekeeper may not be a heavy sleeper. She had opportunity. Even Lady Hope could have murdered the man and blamed Mme. Fournaye knowing she cannot tell otherwise.”

“It’s a mistake to theorize without more facts, Watson.”

Author's Notes: Originates from this dialogue between Lestrade and Holmes:
"We've got it all clear as if we had seen it."
Holmes raised his eyebrows.
"And yet you have sent for me?"
"Ah, yes, that's another matter -- a mere trifle, but the sort of thing you take an interest in -- queer, you know, and what you might call freakish. It has nothing to do with the main fact -- can't have, on the face of it."
"What is it, then?"

"A mere trifle." Hardly.

He realized this anomaly mattered, if not how. Lestrade is a decent bloodhound; he often can scent a clue's importance even if he lacks the acuity to discern what that importance may be.

The Inspector knew the second stain raised a pointed but unknown question, and he knew enough to summon me to provide the answer.
