Welcome back everyone to [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 for the first discussion of Round 2: The Gloria Scott. What did you think of it? As always, here are a few of my random thoughts and questions. Please add your own!

- Although this is the first case chronologically, we're peeking into Holmes and Watson set up nicely together further in the future. They're cozy together, at Baker Street on either side of the fire. And for the first time after much prodding, Holmes is in a "communicative humour" and tells Watson the story of the the start of his career. It's an intimate moment in a way, Holmes revealing at last a long hidden piece of his past to his friend. And of course, being a showman at heart, he does it with an elaborate introduction and surprise reveal via the encoded message to Victor Trevor's father.

- Poor Victor Trevor. He and Holmes made an interesting pair of friends, with an adorable story of how they met. It's a shame that their friendship coincides with such tragedy. It's no wonder Victor and Holmes seem no longer to be friends. Do you see any similarities between Victor Trevor then and Watson now?

- The story of the sailing of the Gloria Scott is harrowing and horrifying. It is the most brutal sequence in the canon, and it stuns me again every time I read it.

- If Holmes never thought of being a detective before talking to Mr. Trevor, what was his plan? What else might he have succeeded at with his particular skill set? Or failed at, for that matter? Perhaps he's lucky Victor Trevor's dog decided to take a bite out of his ankle that morning. Victor Trevor might not feel the same way.

------------------

If not for a dog bite, what might Holmes have become? Had Holmes become anything other than the world’s only consulting detective, would I never have made his acquaintance?

Ah, he has grasped the significance straight away. Singular man. I don’t know, my dear Watson, but I am grateful not to have found out. Clever old dog, he thought fondly.

Character(s): Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson
Summary: Holmes is blessed with certain abilities. Others, not so much.
Warnings: Once again, nearly spoiler-free for the actual story. Apparently GLOR just rolls like that in my world.
Word Count: 60
Author's Notes: 60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories, plus a quote from the original story in italics.
Disclaimer: I don't own them.

Here we go again! We're starting over at sherlock60, this time going in "case order" as per Baring-Gould. Come join the fun!

GLOR2 – Innate Abilities

Watson writes of my genius. He never writes of his own. True, he does not have my observational abilities. His talents are of a warmer kind: for friendship, and ease in expressing it.

I have no such gifts. I struggle to hold the one friend I have, to demonstrate (in my own dullard fashion) everything I lack ability to convey.

"I have some papers here…”

A/N: *waves* Hi guys. Good to meet you. This is my first 60 for 60 and my first ever ACD fic so please be kind.

“As friendless as I,” he said to Watson.

Offhand, as if it was a mere coincidence of their friendship such as a shared love of Wagner or Spanish wine. Not that it had been this incredible discovery, that another person had as great a sense of interminable, miserable loneliness as he, that had been the core that drove them together.

Author's Notes: In canon, Holmes said, "I think that it is most probable that Beddoes, pushed to desperation and believing himself to have been already betrayed, had revenged himself upon Hudson, and had fled from the country with as much money as he could lay his hands on."

"You can't escape your guilt by killing me," Hudson said, sneering.

"My guilt? Blood is on your hands as much as it is on mine, remember?" Beddoes laughed harshly and a chill went up Hudson's spine. "You gambled that I would do anything to keep the secret because I have more to lose." He pulled the trigger. "You were right."

A/N: Correct me if I'm wrong, but seaman Hudson must have been one of the crew bought by Prendergast, not one of the innocents, right? As well as one who was in the "leave no witnesses" camp. So, yeah, I figured pot was calling the kettle black.

Oh! And use of the prompt word "remember" :)

A/N: This is my second time round and as some of you who have read my first set I occasionally use the viewpoint of an animal that was involved.  I decided therefore that as far as possible this time would be an exploration of Holmes' adventures as seen by some part of the animal kingdom.  The Ocelot is of course an OC.

Holmes was a strange fellow and his ankle had a decidedly strange taste.  That’s what attracted me to him, an interest in where he’d been; he didn’t have the same smells as the other students.  He wasn’t much like my master, except that both were solitary fellows, and they enjoyed each others company whilst they shot and fished in silence.

A/N: Yes, okay, so I said I wasn't going to join in on this go-round. But then everyone else was, and it seemed silly not to, and... Let's go with 'I may not do all of them' this time round instead.

When Watson claims he caught me in 'a communicative humour', what the cunning devil means is that he set in place a deliberate plan to coax my past from me. He bided his time until I was in a jubilant mood, then got me atrociously drunk and flattered me until the words just spilled out, right into his eager ears.

Character(s): Sherlock Holmes, mentions of Watson and of Holmes/Trevor
Summary: Holmes reflects on which parts of the story he had to omit when recounting it to the good doctor.
Word Count: 60
Author's Notes: I joined late during the first go-round and fell off towards the end because of other commitments and general summertime travel and adventure. I'm back, now, and I'm very excited to be participating again. The inspiration of this story, I'm a bit ashamed to admit, comes from the end of the atrocious film, Young Sherlock Holmes. Without further ado, here is the fic:

The simple truth, I could never share with Dr. Watson. As fair-minded as he is, it would be cruel to compromise his opinion of me by peddling tales of boyhood romance. I did not know then, as I do now, that Victor’s leaving would bring me a lifetime alone. Though looking back, I imagine I would not change a minute.

The day I gained my profession was that on which I almost killed a man with my deductions. It was generous of Mr Trevor senior to speak with such exaggeration of my ability, when my trifling insights had struck him down almost mortally. His weak heart did not long survive that encounter. Nor did my friendship with his son Victor.

Notes: implied H/W, H/T. A bit obvious, but I'm not sorry. :D

I couldn't hide much from my Watson, not after so much time living together. I called Victor a friend— for a friend he was, and a true one too— but Watson's eyes flashed as I described our meeting. He turned his head slightly, internally chiding himself, and I smiled. Victor had not been the first, but Watson was the last.

To think he asked me to read it aloud. I thought I was helping him.

When it was over, he stared at his fists in his lap, silent.

"Victor?" I ventured a hand out, but he jumped up to stand.

"No, don't! Please don't." He still wouldn't meet my eyes. "I... I think you need to leave."

As he watched that odious man wreak havoc on a once peaceful house, Victor Trevor could not fathom what implored his father to keep the man employed.

It wasn't until his father's sudden illness that Trevor began attempting Holmes's method.   But he could read nothing but illness from the pale skin and labored breathing.  He sent for Holmes, too late.

A/N: This is based on Baring-Gould's theory that the "one winter's night" referred to in the opening of the story takes place following Watson's return to Baker Street after the death of his first wife.

Although Watson is back where he belongs, I can see that grief still weighs heavy on his heart. I know, only too well, how those darker emotions can leach one’s surroundings of light and joy. I would see his good humor rekindled; indeed, my own equilibrium depends on it. Perhaps this early case of mine will light that fire again.

I could not persuade my friend to stay. Despite my greatest efforts, Sherlock was determined to return to his London rooms to continue his chemical experiments. Perhaps he felt that he had made things uncomfortable the night before. I desperately wished that he would stay: things were considerably easier with company.

I returned alone. The house felt cavernous without him.
