Forcing the door open was a matter of seconds. Even though I didn’t bother to bring along my pickpocket tools, Watson is not so irresponsible and carries his old service revolver on himself all the time. From the state of the room, the window violently broken into, everything can be told.

Not good.

Still not a perfect locked room mystery.

I had myself perused the personal advertisements in the morning papers earlier, but did not mention to Holmes that I had spotted the following:

WANTED  All cases that are outside the scope of the law, which show enterprise and originality and which require analysis and deduction.  Cases of either a trivial or sensational nature are not required. Contact Box 221.

Author's Notes: As to Miss Violet Hunter, my friend Holmes, rather to my disappointment, manifested no further interest in her when once she had ceased to be the centre of one of his problems, and she is now the head of a private school at Walsall, where I believe that she has met with considerable success.

The three of us had the compartment to ourselves for the journey back to London and I discreetly feigned sleep to allow my companions to converse.

“I think the good doctor is expecting a happy announcement from us,” smiled Holmes.

Miss Hunter unfortunately seemed to share his amusement.

“I fear, Mr Holmes, that I am already married to my work.”

Happy New Year!

This Sunday, 5th Jan, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Adventure of the Copper Beeches.

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story based on it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it. And if you don't want to write a story but just want to come along and take part in the weekly discussion, that's great too.

Hope to see you on Sunday ^^

I would not wish a sister of mine to take up the position offered at The Copper Beeches, but what occupation would be suited to such a hypothetical maiden if she possessed the same analytical mind and unsocial temperament as myself and Mycroft? Hardly headmistress material, like Miss Hunter. Yet I believe lady doctors now exist: perhaps that might suit.

A/N. Just catching up! This is Mr Fowler's POV.

Rucastle thought he was clever. He thought that beautiful auburn hair, a slim figure and a blue dress would fool me. To him, Alice was a doll, a prize, no more than her pretty features.

I knew her, though, and she was not the girl in the window. I had to do something. I would not be kept from Alice.

A/N: So… um… I originally set out to write about Alice finding out about Violet via a letter from Mr Fowler and her reaction to that but then I kept thinking about how if Mr Fowler was writing her letters she’d find them really important and I got a bit carried away.

She never so much read his letters as she devoured them, imbuing every word until it was as if the ink had been carved into her skin instead of onto the paper. They were her lifeline and Mrs Toller was her Hermes; messenger from the gods. Afterwards she would still cling to them as holy relics from a bygone age.

Author's Notes: I hadn't planned to let Mercy Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes ever share the same room, but I guess they can both do with a break and a nice cup of tea.

Even Sherlock Holmes would notice that Miss Mercy Moriarty made a stunning appearance in her mourning dress of latest fashion. Still, it provided no explanation as to why their meeting happened in a tea house. He expressed his condolences.
“Nobody died. I mourn the loss of a friend who is going leave the Sisterhood, for matrimony.”
“I understand.”
“I know.”

Country Landscapes

On the train to Hampshire, we passed though lovely countryside, with picturesque farmsteads dotting the rolling landscape. Whilst I admired the beauty of it, Holmes took a darker view, talking instead of the cruelties and secret wickedness that might flourish there unchecked.

I could not help but wonder if his words were fancy or if he knew whereof he spoke.

A blow, a cry, another blow and silence. ‘At least that’s one less mouth to feed.’

I have heard it called natural selection when a weak mouse dies of cold and another gets eaten by a fox.  And yes, if there is not much food, only some will survive.  But to kill without reason and without anybody knowing or caring?

COPP – No Sister of Mine

I could not help speculating on it. Nothing about her physically was similar, but the self-sufficiency, the intelligence, the determination; qualities so like what I remembered.

No sister of mine would have been foolish enough – or reduced enough – as to fall into Rucastle’s mysterious scheme, but I could not help but wonder what she would have become, had she lived.

Extended-play version (100 words):

I could not help reflecting on it, long after Miss Hunter had left for her position. In fact, the question haunted me for weeks. Nothing about her physically was similar, but the self-sufficiency, the intelligence, the determination; all these were so like what I remembered. And she, like Mycroft and myself, would have had to make her own way. Marriage, had she been so inclined, and so lucky; or some form of employment.

No, no sister of mine would have fallen into Rucastle’s mysterious scheme, but I could not help but wonder what she would have become, had she lived.

You may think it odd, but my greatest sorrow regarding the events at the Copper Beeches was that I was forced to kill the dog, even though it was something of a mercy. I have a great fondness for dogs, and have owned many. The cruelty of perpetual starvation can make even the noblest of beasts lash out in fury.

I should hate Sherlock Holmes for what he did to my family. Jephro would never have truly hurt selfish, little Alice; he was only doing what was necessary for the greater good of us all. But how could I despise the man who made my continued existence so essential to my dearest husband? I will be the last Mrs. Rucastle.

It stings when Holmes dismisses my writing as trivial. Were it up to him, the records of his cases would be nothing more than a dull iteration of the dry facts. Yet for all his cold logic and reasoning, he thinks of his work as art.

Holmes will never admit it, but every artist wishes for an exhibition. Even him.

It is in his hands one can see Watson’s true nature. His finger pulls the trigger, eliminating the threat with one shot. His palm presses the kidnapper’s gaping wound while his other hand reaches for gauze and anesthetic. Watson’s hands save lives, good or evil, deserved or not. All life is life, and the doctor is sworn to protect it.

“'Holmes, rather to my disappointment, manifested no further interest in her',” he read. “ Watson, what interest would I have in a woman? Especially when compared to you?”

“You have been in an abominable mood for weeks,” I said. “At this point, I would find it a relief if you were to develop an interest in women.”
